TOP COATING EXPERIMENTS – JULY 2011

  • PAINT AND PRIMER FORMULATIONS – DESCRIPTION AND CODING

  • “Primer” formulations

  • ENC: Enkryl+Arginotec (pre-coated at STFI)

  • PU-ARG: polyurethane modified acrylic resin based primer with 10% w/w arginotec (this is to replace the Enkryl-Arginotec coating)

  • Paint formulations

  • SURFA: Nanophos’ Surfa Paint, polyurethane modified acrylic paint (same as in 1st prototype. Surfa paint sent to STFI in August had increased amount of thickeners)

  • SURFA+5%ARG: Nanophos’ paint with 5% w/w arginotec and increased viscosity (Bulk TiO2 is replaced by Arginotec by 5%)

  • NONWOVEN SUBSTRATES

  • HOT: NRVII with hotmelt on the back (sent from STFI July 2011)

  • HOT/ENC: NRVII with hotmelt on the back and Enkryl-Arginotec on the top (STFI)

Properties of paint coatings on primed metal substrates

  • Nanophospaint SURFA shows the lowest maximum backside temperature.

  • Using a first coating with PU-ARG with SURFA paint increases slightly the backside temperature.

  • SURFA paint with 5% Arginotec shows increased temperature by ~2.5 °C and lower whiteness index compared to SURFA paint.

Paints-Coatings on nonwoven

  • For the hotmelt nonwoven, Surfa paint with Arginotec and increased thickeners shows slightly higher coverage, lower temperature and slightly lower reflectance than surfa paint. The increase of coverage and decrease in max. temperature might be due to Arginotec and/or the increased amount of thickeners in the paint. The lower reflectance might be due to the colour change induced by Arginotec as indicated by the lower whiteness index value.

  • For the hotmelt/Encryl-Arginotec nonwoven, Surfa paint with arginotec shows higher coverage (increased by 3%), similar maximum temperature and slighlty higher reflectance. This behaviour could be related to the colour change induced by Arginotec and / or the increased coverage.

  • Concerning the first layer, PU-ARG and ENC-ARG show similar behaviour when coated with Surfa paint on top. However, PU-ARG requires less amount of paint.

  • Arginotec seems to decrease thermal emittance

Conclusions

  • Metal samples:

  • Surfa paint shows the best behaviour. Arginotec in Surfa paint or in the primer coating decreases the whiteness index and increases the backside temperature.

  • Top membrane:

  • Surfa paint applied directly on the nonwoven sample shows the highest Reflectance and whiteness index values. Surfa paint with Arginotec shows increased coverage and lower temperature, but decreased whiteness and reflectance.

  • The use of a “primer” (ENC-ARG or PU-ARG) as 1st layer decreases the paint consumption, but also the whiteness and reflectance of the top membrane. This could be fixed by increasing the paint coverage.

  • Arginotec seems to decrease emittance

  • The different top coating combinations are similar to the samples STFI has prepared. The different hotmelt variants for backside sealing is not expected to effect strongly the behaviour of the top coating .

  • ASTM G7-97 could be used to design the ageing protocol

  • What can we use as control (reference) materials (high and low durability)?

  • 0 or 5oangle?

  • Backed or unbacked samples? Black box exposure?

  • Should the samples be firmly adhered to a specified substrate?

  • How will this affect the after ageing tests (e.g. Reflectance?)

  • Exposure racks (plywood?)

  • Climatological Data

  • Ambient temperature

  • Relative Humidity

  • Total Solar Radiation

  • Total Solar UV and Narrow-Band Solar UV Radiation? Not available in NTUA!

  • Exposure time (Calendar, Radiant exposure, Deterioration basis or property change of reference material)
