  1. What has this... ...got to do with this?

  2. From DNA to Proteins. -Recap knowledge of protein synthesis from GCSE. -Be able to describe the structure of DNA, mRNA and tRNA. -State the difference between DNA and RNA.

  3. DNA Found inside cell nucleus. Arranged in chromosomes. Gene Section of DNA that codes for a single protein. Different versions of the same gene are known as alleles. RNA Ribose nucleic acid. Is the intermediate between DNA and proteins. Proteins Made up of amino acids, the order of which is determined by the series of nitrogenous bases in the gene.

  4. Protein Synthesis Making proteins. Proteins are made up of amino acids The order of bases in a gene determines the order of strands in a protein. Remember 1 gene = 1 protein !!!!!!!

  5. Protein Synthesis • DNA unzips inside the nucleus. • DNA is replicated to form mRNA. • mRNA moves out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm • A ribosome attaches itself to the mRNA. • The ribosome matches up amino acids with the codons (set of 3 bases).

  6. Protein Synthesis The following video shows Protein Synthesis taking place in cells. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3fOXt4MrOM

  7. Draw a picture to show the structure of a DNA (deoxyribose nucleic acid) molecule. Include the following terms... Ribose sugar, phosphate group, sugar phosphate back bone, nucleotide base, pyramidine, purine, adenosine, guanine, cytosine, thymidine. • Describe a molecule of RNA (ribose nucleic acid) is different to a molecule of DNA. There are 3 main differences. • Draw the structure of a molecule of mRNA (messenger) and tRNA (transfer).
