  1. Nuclear energy By Jeffrey

  2. What is nuclear energy? • It is a clean energy source. • It is made when neutrons hit Uranium 235. • The energy in nuclear plants is fission.

  3. Benefits and Negatives Some benefits are: • It produces very little Carbon Dioxide. • The uranium pellets are very small, but one pellet produces the same amount of energy as 150 gallons of oil! Some negatives are: • Nuclear energy produces radioactive waste. • Nuclear energy is unrenewable.

  4. How does nuclear energy work? • The fission produces heat that heats water into steam. • The steam turns a turbine to make electricity • The steam cools back into water in a cooling tower.

  5. Types of reactors • There are two types of reactors: • boiling water reactors and pressurized water reactors. ( BWR and PWR)

  6. BWRs • BWRs work by turning water into steam. • The steam turns a turbine that makes electricity • The steam cools down back into water in a cooling tower.

  7. PWRs • PWRs work by heating pressured water so that it doesn’t turn into steam • The hot water heats water in a steam generator • That steam turns a turbine. • The hot water flows back to the “engine” to be reheated

  9. Where? • Nuclear energy is in many states such as: • Missouri, Illinois, Texas and more! • The one nuclear plant in Missouri is located in Callaway County, which is 80 miles away from St. Louis.

  11. Nuclear for future? • Nuclear wouldn’t be a good energy source for the future because: • Nuclear is unrenewable • Nuclear is very dangerous, and we need a safer way to store it. • However, scientist are thinking of burying radioactive waste in Yucca Mountain
