Objectives of Gecobio • Promote the sector of Health Sciences and Technology in Valencia. • Promote the generating and marketing of new products and technological services • Promote the scientific and business capacity of Valencia • Attract investment and generate business opportunities. • Increase the social well-being and quality of life • Improve the sanitary environment of the citizens with the creation of new businesses, products and services • Promote science-business cooperation • Prompt cooperation between scientists-businessmen-investors-entrepreneurs and professionals of the sector • Contribute to a better world • Prompt initiatives of development cooperation, channelling products and technological health services to developing countries

Research Groups • 360 different Research Areas • 5 Technological Institutes and 12 Research Centers • 720 Researchers in 189 different Research Areas • Over 400 publications in 2006 • Business Capacities • Over 2.000 companies related to the sector • Some world leading companies in specific areas, i.e. IVI • Increasing creation of Tech-based companies • Valencia recognition is rapidly increasing worldwide

Gecobio.com (Private site) • Online Knowledge Management Tool where: • each user is registered according to his/her knowledge profile (Knowledge Map) • a network of information transfer is established, exclusively among users with the same profile • Avoiding over-information • Estimation for 2007 • 1.700 users registered • 200 products • 75 services • Services for researchers and professionals, companies, entrepreneurs and investors: • Information Services: • Publication and availability of information personalized by the user • Specialised searches: • Publications, patents, financial products, … • Online Technology Market: • Catalogue of business products and services • Online supply and demand of products and services • Funding opportunities and financial products

Scientific-Entreprenurial Promotion Activities • Organisation of International scientific-entrepreneurial bilateral workshops • Based on one-to-one meetings and visits to enterprise and technological centre facilities • First experience: Switzerland, November 2006 • Spanish Delegation (73 attendees) • 21 companies (500ME joint turnover), 5 Universities, 5 Technological Institutes, 12 Organisations • Inaugurated by the mayor of Valencia • Swiss Delegation (42 attendees) • 15 companies, 5 Universities, 6 Institutes, 4 Official Agencies • Secretary of State for Economic Matters • Secretary of State for Education and Investigation • 70 One to one meetings • Working Breakfasts • Brief breakfast meetings between members of Gecobio who belong to common areas of knowledge • A Key Note Speaker from one or several areas • Open debate with members

Venture Capital Fund & Projects Promotion Office • 30 million Euros focussed on Innovative Sectors • Life Sciences, nanotechnology and ICT • Mixed Capital • 25% Public Funding - Valencian Finance Institute (IVF) • 75% Private investors and corporate • Investments between 1 - 3 million euros per project initial phases: • Capital seed, start ups, and expansion • Preferably those contributing to the strategic development of Valencia • Supported by the Projects Promotion Office • Collect, evaluate and structure projects susceptible of becoming financed • Analyse the financial and technical viability and suitability of the projects • Match projects to the appropriate financial product: Venture Capital, BAN, loans, …

Development Cooperation Program • In collaboration with: • Department of Health of Peru, MINSA • Valencian NGO Firefighters in Action • Gecobio members: Hospitals, Companies, etc. … • Public and private support and sponsorship • Improvement and rehabilitation of the Network of Health Care Centres in Cuzco City, Perú • For every 1000 children that were born in Peru in 2005, 33 died before their first birthday because of lack of resources • The state of facilities is ruinous, they are overflowing and lacking staff and basic supplies • Peru designates 1.6% of its PIB to Public Health  DO NOT HAVE  ARE NOT ABLE • Action Plan • Improvement and rehabilitation of the 8 Health Centres • Facilities • Basic instruments and equipment • Basic medicines and materials • Estimate of two Health Centres per year  4 years in all. • Program budget • 1.6 million Euros • An average of some 200,000€ per Health Centre(project)

Conclusions & Recommendations Valencia aims to become a reference worldwide in the sector of Health Sciences and Technologies Recommendations from our experience • Identify your sector capacities and competitiveness • Involve all relevant public entities and business organizations to jointly impulse the sector • Obtain the necessary financial support, i.e. Venture Capital • Clearly define, implement and communicate services for the business and scientific communities • Develop dynamic actions and involve all stakeholders • Define an ambitious marketing strategy
