  1. TREC UPDATE “A Few Words From TREC”

  2. INSTRUCTORS (CORE OR PRE-LICENSURE COURSES) • TREC approval authorizes Core instructors to teach pre-licensure courses in specific subjects based on professional experience. • Core instructor approval also provides authorization to teach all MCE elective courses. • The current fee to apply or renew is $150 • Instructors are approved for a term of 4 years. • An approved instructor must be prepared to provide a copy of the TREC-approval letter to their education provider. • While TREC registers and approves instructors, it is the responsibility of the education provider who employs the instructor to make sure that the instructor is actually qualified to teach a given course or subject. • Once approved, a Core instructor may request approval to add additional Core courses to their approval.

  3. MCE ELECTIVE & NON-ELECTIVE COURSES • Instructors who are approved to teach Core courses may also teach MCE elective courses. • MCE elective courses are courses other than the TREC mandatory Legal Update & Ethics MCE or Broker Responsibility courses. • MCE elective courses that TREC approves must be related to activities for which a real estate license is required and increase or support the licensee’s development of skill and competence. • MCE non-elective courses Legal Update & Ethics and the Broker Responsibility course. • Instructor certification is required to teach TREC’s non-elective courses. • Core instructor approval to teach Principles of Real Estate; Law of Agency; and Law of Contracts will allow an instructor to attend train-the-trainer courses to become certified to teach Legal Update & Ethics MCE courses. • In addition to the above, in order to teach the Broker Responsibility course an instructor must also be approved to teach the core Real Estate Brokerage course.

  4. NON-ELECTIVE COURSES • The Instructor’s certification approval term coincides with the non-elective course approval term. • If an instructor allows his or her Core instructor approval to expire, they will also be unable to teach MCE elective or non-elective courses. • Approval terms for Legal Update & Ethics and the Broker Responsibility Course. • Instructors must get re-certified to teach the non-elective course when the old version expires and a new version is available. • When non-elective courses expire, the old version cannot be offered or taught for MCE credit. • Online providers are at a disadvantage when non-elective courses expire. • Students completing the old version after the course expires will not receive credit.

  5. Encourage students to complete course evaluation forms. Good instructors want to know what and if their students are learning. • Train-the-Trainer Certification is not the same as Instructor Training. • Future collaboration with TRETA

  6. RECENT CHANGES REGARDING CORE (PRE-LICENSURE) COURSES • Courses approved prior to January 1, 2011 will all expire December 31, 2015 unless the course itself is revised by rule. • Through ESAC recommendations the Commission has already revised several Core courses by rule. • Revised core courses are to be implemented 12 months from the effective date of the rule for classroom courses; 15 months for alternative delivery courses. • Revised Real Estate Principles courses will be due September 2014; alternative delivery versions revised by December 2014. • S-L-O-W-L-Y begin to submit core courses to TREC now.

  7. MCE CLASSROOM ROSTERS • Instructors are usually responsible for ensuring that students complete the rosters before submitting to TREC. • Submit rosters within 10 days of course completion. • Electronic filing of rosters. • Most rosters are currently received via email or downloaded from TREC fax machines.

  8. ROSTERS (CONT’D.) • Incorrect course numbers, incorrect provider numbers, broker license numbers provided instead of the salesperson’s license number; signatures or names and numbers are illegible. • Contact education@trec.texas.gov if roster is not posted within 5 business days. • When sending rosters via email subject line should read: Provider #; Course #; Provider Name. • Better system needed/Suggestions/What would be Helpful?
