  1. Electrolysis project Electrode: Is an electrical conductor that is used to pass current through an electrolyte.

  2. Electrolyte • Is any substance that has free ions that make a substance electrically conductive. • Some electrolytes are molten and others are solids. • They are usually an ionic solution • They are solutions of acids, bases or salts

  3. Anode and Cathode Anode: Is the positive electrode where the current flows in from the outside Cathode: Is the negative electrode where the current flows out

  4. Products • Molten lead (II) bromide (PbBr2) Lead + bromine + hydrogen gas • Aqueous copper chloride (CuCl2)  Copper + chlorine gas • Dilute sulphuric acid (H2So4) Hydrogen + oxygen • Aqueous copper sulphate (CuSo4)  Copper + oxygen

  5. Industrial processes • Refining copper by electrolysis: Is used in a factory with copper wires and is very efficient because it can conduct high amounts of electricity. You can only refine copper by electrolysis. The electrolyte consists of CuSo4 and the electrodes are made from Cu2+. • Refining: The process of purification

  6. Electroplating of metals: During this process, the surface that is going to be covered acts as a cathode in an electrolytic cell. The material that covers the material is the anode. Electroplating is used in industry to cover a less expensive metal with a more expensive one. Electroplating: The process of coating a surface of a conducting material with a metal.

  7. Obtaining aluminium from pure aluminium oxide (in molten cryolite): In order to obtain aluminium from pure background aluminium oxide you have to refine bauxite in the Bayer process. Bauxite is background the most important ore of aluminium and the aluminium oxide must be purified before it can be refined to aluminium metal. background

  8. Obtaining products from sodium chloride • Chlorine: In order to obtain chlorine from sodium chloride electrolysis is required. When the sodium chloride is put in the test tube the sodium and the chloride separate because the current has been passed. • Hydrogen: When the sodium chloride is in the test tube hydrogen gas forms at the cathode • Sodium hydroxide: This is the product after sodium chloride has been through the process of electrolysis.
