Catalyst: Mystery Elements • Take out your homework and element project. • Write the name of the elements based on the clues below: • The semi-metal with the smallest atomic number. • The halogen with 45 neutrons on average. • The two transition metals that pennies are made out of. Hint: the Group 11 and Group 12 elements with the smallest atomic number.

  3. Catalyst Answer 1 • Boron Fun Fact: Boron is used to control nuclear reactions. It is used in control rods for nuclear reactors.

  4. Catalyst Answer 2 • Bromine Fun fact: salt tablets made of sodium and bromine are used to disinfect swimming pools.

  5. Catalyst Answer 3 • Zinc and Copper • Currently, pennies are 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. • Pennies were made of pure copper until the year 1837. • After that, they have been different combinations of copper, zinc, and tin.

Unit 1: Jeopardy Rules • Everyone needs paper and pencil. • Your team is your table group. • Each team gets one white board. • Teams take turns picking the questions. • All teams must write the answer on the white board, but the team that picked the question gets a chance to answer first. • If the team gets the question wrong, then they pick the team to get the second chance at the question.

  10. Final Jeopardy Answer Explanation: Atomic radius increases as we move down a group and decreases from left to right. The biggest element will be lower and to the left. The smallest element will be higher and to the right. • P S O

  11. Element Project Presentation Sign Up • Would you like to present your element project in class on Thursday or Friday? • Sign up on the board. • Your presentation should be about 3 minutes. Just explain some of the properties of your element and share the discovery, uses, or other fun facts. • Students who present their project will receive “life skills” credit.
