The Safe Haven of EMI falls into “alternative to suspension programs”, which are nationally categorized as Alternative Learning Program (ALP). • The Safe Haven of EMI is one of several models of alternative to suspensions programs in Ohio. The only K-8 suspension support program in Greater Cleveland. • The Safe Haven of EMI provides economically challenged behaviorally at-risk students a safe and supervised environment during suspension. • The Safe Haven of EMI provides an environment for suspended youth to continue academic requirements and promotes the educational progress of youth. • The Safe Haven of EMI makes the best use of limited resources while serving a growing population.   3. EMI recognized a community need for out-of-school suspended students in elementary and middle school who are left with little or no supervision. In 2009, EMI launched Safe Haven to address this need. This a short term alternative learning program that provides academic and behavioral remediation for students receiving up to 10 days of suspension Introduction

  8. The CMSD Office of Student Appeals shares that the district is in the process of implementing a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) platform into their curriculum. SEL is a district wide strategic plan to integrate self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building and responsible decision making into the core educational environment for students. Alternative Learning Programs (ALP) like Safe Haven of EMI offer students a unique opportunity to engage in rehabilitative action instead of disciplinary action, which coincides with the SEL platform.
