  1. GEAR UP KENTUCKY GAINING EARLY AWARENESS AND READINESS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Gear Up History President Clinton’s administration, 1998 5 year Federal grant designed to promote an increase in the number of students who enter Monies granted to Gear Up schools are used in Awareness, Access, Engagement, Support and Rigor components Extended through Congress and we are on our 2nd 5 years

  3. Gear Up Facts Provides low income students with greater access to postsecondary education Serves an entire cohort of students from 7th through 12th grade Funding based on number of students Seven Project Associates across the state and numerous site coordinators in the schools College Coaches-added support to Gear Up Kentucky program this year

  4. Awareness Providing students with information regarding the variety of post secondary opportunities: career/technical, two and four year institutions Discussion of grants, loans and scholarship opportunities College campus visits

  5. Access Providing students with opportunities to tour a variety of post secondary institutions when possible.

  6. Rigor Promoting higher level thinking skills Creating academic opportunities that are engaging and focus on college bound levels and higher level classes. Professional staff development opportunities that are content specific and promote higher level thinking skills and problem solving Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, etc.

  7. Engagement Focuses on parental awareness of grants, loans and scholarship opportunities Promote the philosophy that there are a variety of post secondary opportunities available for all students Encourage parents to talk about college as a possibility for their student, speak in language of not if but “WHEN” you go to college.

  8. GEAR UP PARENTS EFFECT: Student Achievement Student Attitudes and Behavior School Policies when involved on PTSA, SBDM, etc

  9. Support Providing students with remediation opportunities Providing students with enrichment opportunities ACT/SAT preparation Black Achievers program GUK Gazette-monthly newspaper ILP-Individualized Learning Plan Mentoring Summer academic camp opportunities

  10. GEAR UP complements other federal programs by: Starting earlier, no later than 7th grade. Staying with students through high school Transforming schools Supporting college scholarships Leveraging local resources Bolstering state efforts
