  1. STEM Real Careers for Today’s Schoolchildren

  2. For 9th Std. students only

  3. Why do we learn astronomy? • Astronomy helps us to understand some of the most basic questions that humans, and probably all intelligent beings, have. Like:- • What is universe? • Beginning of time, energy, matter. • Who are we? What is Life? Are we alone? Broadly speaking Astronomy applies Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  4. Branches of astronomy? Astronomy follows natural law and is therefore a natural science. It has about 20 disciplines of education like:Planetary Science, Solar Astronomy, Stellar Astronomy, Galactic Astronomy, Cosmology, Astrophysics, Astrobiology, Astrochemistry, Observational Astronomy…and so on.

  5. Astronomy, really? Humans have been observing and studying Astronomy since thousands of years. Aryabhata is the first known astronomer from India. But there are more unsolved problems of astronomy than what we have come to know till date. This makes it an exciting subject to study.(Read the blog on www.stemschoolprogram.com on Saraswati Supercluster of Galaxies as an example.)

  6. Where to study Astronomy and Astrophysics in India? Some of the leading institutes in India which teach astronomy and astrophysics are: Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru (IIA), Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISc), National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune (NCRA-TIFR), Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune (IUCAA), Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad (PRL), Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru (RRI)

  7. Where to study Astronomy and Astrophysics in India? Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (TIFR) Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) Centre of Excellence in Space Sciences, Kolkata

  8. Where to study Astronomy and Astrophysics out of India? Some of the leading universities from abroad which teach astronomy and astrophysics are: UK University of Cambridge USA California Institute of Technology Harvard University University of California at Berkeley and Santa Cruz Princeton University

  9. Courses Theoretical research career in Astronomy & Astrophysics typically involves doing a Bachelors in Engineering or Technology,Masters in Physics or Almost all institutes listed above and many more offer PhD program in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

  10. Career Careers in Astronomy & Astrophysics can be broadly divided as Theoretical or Observational. To make significant contribution you have to be master both. Careers options are plenty like in Research, and Education, or a combination of both. Government organisations like ISRO, TIFR, GMRT, etc. in India, and CERN, NASA, ESA, etc. abroad offers good career prospects.

  11. Career Many private organisations like Antrex, Team Indus and others in India, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, MarsOne, etc. from abroad provide good career opportunities. Private industries have opened up huge business opportunities in the domain of Space which requires good knowledge of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Observatories, Museums, Online and print media also requires talented people with knowledge of Astronomy.
