  1. Evidence Evaluation from a. west crime scene CSI agents: Ambree Lavelle, Lauren Miceli, Casey Halloway

  2. Physical Properties • An observation • A physical property is any characteristics of matter that is observable or measureable. • Ex. Color, order, texture, shape, volume, mass, weight, size, temp., BP, etc.

  3. Chemical Properties • Chemical properties describe matter based on it’s ability to change into new matter that has different properties. • Ability of a substance to react reactivity • Ex. Flammability, oxidize, combustibility

  4. Metal Evidence Evaluation Metal 2 Metal 1

  5. Metal Evidence Evaluation • Identity of metal 1: steel • Supporting evidence: Magnetic, thin, heavy, ductility,2.3 (mass)/1 (volume) 2.3g cm³ density, 7.83g/cm3 (internet found) http://www.buzzle.com/articles/physical-properties-of-steel.html

  6. Metal Evidence Evaluation • Identity of metal 2: Aluminum • Supporting evidence: Non magnetic, fat, light, formability, malleability, 1.9 g/2 cm³, .95 cm³ density (what we found), 2.7g/cm3 http://www.hydro.com/en/Subsites/NorthAmerica/Aluminum/Properties-of-Aluminum/

  7. Liquid Evaluation • Identity of liquid: Rubbing alcohol • Evidence: smells, flammable, chemical property, transparent, 21 cm³ (volume), 25.20 g (mass), density = 1.2 g/cm³

  8. Powder Evidence • Mystery powder: baking powder • Evidence: reacted with iodine (black), reacted with vinegar (white, bubbled up, air bubbles appeared), became squishy and airy with water. Mystery powder Key: 1st= react with water 2nd= react with vinegar 3rd= react to iodine Baking powder

  9. Summary • We concluded that the metals found at the A West crime scene were: Steel and Aluminum • The Liquid was rubbing alcohol • The Powder was baking powder
