  2. Local Wellness Policy • Public Law 108-265, Section 204 • Each LEA participating in National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program • Establish policy for schools under the LEA • Intent of Congress = Local level • Awaiting guidance from USDA • 1st day of school after July 1, 2006

Local Wellness Policy • Goals for nutrition education, physical activity and other school based activities designed to promote student wellness • Nutrition guidelines for all foods available on the school campus during the school day with the objectives of promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity • Plan for measuring implementation and assigns operational responsibility • Involves parents, students, representatives of the school food authority, the school board, school administrators, and the public

Action Steps to Take Now • Bring the required members together • Determine what collaborative councils currently exist • Investigate what policies currently exist related to nutrition and physical activity • Consider incorporating the Wellness Policy as part of the Coordinated School Health Model

Creating the Policy • Authority: Who is establishing the policy • Rationale: Why this policy is necessary Gather health statistics, survey parents, conduct needs assessment • Priority Population: To whom the policy applies • Definitions: Major terms in the policy • Activities: What is the program, strategy and requirement of the policy

Creating the Policy • Administration: Whoenforces the policy • Consequences: What are the rewards for compliance and sanctions for noncompliance • Evaluation: How will policy’s effect be measured and how that information will be used • Duration: When the policy is adopted, when it takes effect, and when it expires.
