While traveling between Manchester and London by train in 1990, she was first struck by the idea of writing the renowned Harry Potter series Hardships • Married television journalist Jorge Arantes in 1992, but the marriage soon failed • Following divorce in 1993, Rowling returned to Great Britain with infant daughter, Jessica, and took up residence in Edinburgh, Scotland, with her younger sister Dianne • Cost of child care made it uneconomical to work • Difficult to continue writing while suffering from the emotional fallout of her failed marriage • Depression from divorce and economic pressure of supporting herself as well as young child • Rowling’s books were constantly rejected by major publishing companies • Rowling’s agent, Christopher Little, never believed that children’s books made any money and put her books in the reject pile • It was thanks to an office assistant who took the typescript out of the reject pile because it had an attractive binding • It is unclear whether any of the editors who rejected the Harry Potter books actually bothered to read it • Goes to show the lottery chance of books becoming published and well-known • Rowling might easily have remained an impoverished French teacher for the duration of her adult life Born: 31st July 1965 Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, England British author of the phenomenal Harry Pottersaga Author of the books that the Harry Potter movie series is based on Joanne Kathleen Rowling Stableford, B.S., January 2009, ‘J.K.
