  2. Militarism • Militarism means that the army and military forces are given a high profile by the government. The growing division had led to an arms race between the main countries. • The armies of both France and Germany had more than doubled between 1870 and 1914 and there was fierce competition between Britain and Germany for command of the seas. • The British had introduced the 'Dreadnought', a huge battleship, in 1906. • The Germans soon followed suit introducing their own battleships.

  4. Alliances • An alliance is when countries get together to protect themselves • In 1914 there were 2 main alliances • Europe was divided into 2 sides each with massive armies • It was only a matter of time before a war started

  6. Imperialism When a country possesses lands overseas it is called Imperialism Germany did not have many lands overseas and thought that she should have some Germany was jealous of Britain and France

  8. Nationalism • This means thinking that your country is better than others • When people feel very nationalistic they often are prepared to fight in wars for their country • This was the case in 1914 just before the start of WW1
