  1. Metallicnanofabrication guided by electron waves Jérôme Bürki, Raymond E. Goldstein & Charles A. Stafford, University of Arizona Physical Review Letters 91, 254501 (2003) • Fabricating nanoscale components for electronics will require new techniques based on quantum mechanics. • Kondo & Takayanagi (1997): long, atomically-thin metal cylinders form spontaneously, starting from randomly-shaped nanobridges suspended between two electrodes. • This phenomenon defied theoretical explanation for over six years. • Our solution: Nanoscale Free-Electron Model + surface self-diffusion of atoms. Total length of simulation cell = 65 nanometers [Click on nanowire to play movie] Project supported by National Science Foundation under Grants No. 0312028 & 0072703.
