  4. Research Team Summaries • Team 1*: LIDAR-based sampling procedures for regional forest biomass and carbon estimation: exploring relationships between data extracted from airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), biomass/carbon stocks and the processes associated with carbon sequestration of boreal and temperate forest ecosystems. • Leaders: Paul Bolstad UMN. Erik Næsset UMB. • Members:7 UMB; 2 UMN.

  5. Summaries contd • Team 2*: Ecological, technical and economic aspects of bioenergy based on forestry and agriculture resources: exploring ways to integrate forest biofuels production with existing timber and forest management; and advancing the opportunities for forest-based biomass production in Norway and Minnesota through the exchange of information on biomass production and processing technologies. • Leaders: Dean Current and Howard Hoganson UMN. Birger Solberg UMB. • Members: 4 UMB; 4-5 UMN

  6. Summaries contd • Team 3*: Liquefaction of biomass for biofuel production: exchanging technical information and expertise to speed up the development of a microwaveassisted pyrolysis technology to convert biomass into bio-oils and other biobased products. • Leaders: Roger Ruan UMN. Petter Heyerdahl UMB. • Members:7 UMB; 6-7 UMN

  7. Summaries contd • Team 4*: Lignocellulose to biofuels: using molecular, biochemical, and genetic tools to develop carbohydrate modules (CBMs) and other approaches for more effective enzymatic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into products (e.g. ethanol) for bioenergy and other uses. • Leaders: Simo Sarkanen and Claudia Schmidt-Dannert UMN. Vincent Eijsink UMB. • Members:7 UMB; 4+ UMN.

  8. Summaries contd • Team 5: Functional genomics to advance dairy cattle health: utilizing state of-the-art technologies in functional genomics to identify genetic factors affecting bovine disease (clinical mastitis) and productivity. • Leaders: Scott Fahrenkrug UMN. Sigbjørn Lien UMB. • Members:4 UMB; 1 NVH ?; 2 UMN

  9. Summaries contd • Team 6: Mycotoxin prevention in cereal crops by enhanced host plant • resistance: using genetic and molecular tools to develop strains of cereal grains resistant to the conditions that promote the growth of mycotoxin producing fungi. • Leaders: James Anderson UMN. Åsmund Bjørnstad UMB. • Members:6+ UMB/Bioforsk; 6 UMN

  10. Research Team Summary Table

  11. Student Mobility Table * UMN – refers to UMN student(s) studying/doing research at UMB * UMB – refers to UMB student(s) studying/doing research at UMN Note that this table is only for students who have spent (or will spend) significant time at the other university.

  12. Other goals • Summarize and develop new strategies for funding • Determine opportunities and timelines for joint research paper(s) • Share efforts to involve industry, develop new approaches • Explore ways to expand teams where appropriate
