  1. Swaziland is a small country, in Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa and Mozambique. • Population: 1,185,000 • The head of state is the king, currently King Mswati III • Most Swazis live in rural homesteads, the principal occupation is either subsistence farming or livestock herding

  2. Swaziland ranks as a lower middle income country, but it's estimated that 69% of the population lives in poverty • Swaziland is critically affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic, and has the highest HIV infection rate in the world (26% of all adults) • Tuberculosis is also a significant problem, with an 18% mortality rate • Swaziland has the lowest life expectancy in the world at 31.88 years

  3. PALFRIDGE COMMITMENTExploring future refrigeration technology in synergy with nature

  4. THE NEED FOR A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR REFRIGERATING VACCINES , FOOD AND BEVERAGES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

  5. GTZ Terms of Reference To preserve medicine , food & beverages for human consumption at high ambient temperatures ( 48°c ) using solar energy without the use of chemical storage batteries. Key Design Criteria • Sustainability • Simplicity • Safety • Reliability • Robustness

  6. The Solar therm Range Commercial Merchandiser (LC 86) Medical Unit (MC 72) Domestic Unit (LS 150)

  7. Operation of the Solar therm Units • During sunlight hours, energy from the sun is converted into electrical energy, which is used to cool the product. Any excess energy is stored in a ballast load ( Phase Change Material ) and is used during low light & low energy conditions. • The cooling system has no battery storage and comprises of the refrigerator and 2 x 90 watt Photovoltaic panels

  8. Operating Principles

  9. MC72-Medical Unit • This equipment is designed for hospitals, clinics, and ambulances. This Chest Type unit comprises of two compartments: -Vaccine storage -Freezer compartment. • A mechanical damper regulates the amount of cooling and keeps it between 2°C and 8°C. • The dampers and controller are preset to achieve optimum vaccine temperatures in all ambient temperature conditions. • Ample insulation also allows for vaccines and medicines to be safely stored for extended periods of time in low light conditions.

  10. Performance Characteristics at 48°C ambient and 75%Rh

  11. This is a commercial merchandiser comprising of controller and BD35k compressor. Beverages are stored in a basket suspended from the top of the cabinet. The unit has a ballast load. The remainder of the space is filled with product. The controller is pre-set to achieve optimum beverage temperatures in all ambient temperature conditions. LC86-Commercial Merchandiser

  12. Performance Characteristics at 48°C ambient and 75%Rh

  13. This unit is designed for the storage of fresh food, and is aimed primarily at rural homesteads and areas with intermittent power supply from the national grid. It is a single door design with separate fridge and freezer compartments that are able to maintain temperatures from 2°C to –9°C. Ample insulation also allows for food to be safely stored for extended periods of time in low light conditions. The controller is preset to achieve optimum fresh food temperatures in all ambient temperature conditions. LS150-Domestic

  14. Performance Characteristics at 43°C ambient and 75%Rh

  15. COST OF REFRIGERATORS

  16. TESTING & APPROVAL Two phases viz • Laboratory – as per WHO PQS specs – Simulated Load & Power supply to unit. • IEC 60335 1/2/24 – Safety Specs. • SANS 15502 – Performance • CE Declaration • Field operation – tested in situation at various countries in both hemispheres in all ambients. - Refrigerator performance data collected using remote radio link.

  17. Data Collection • Performance data ( temperature & power consumption ) is logged electronically. • Alarms ( door open etc ) also logged. • Data is transmitted daily via the telephone network to a website. • The website collates the data from all the various loggers worldwide and presents it in a readable pictorial format. • Anyone can ascess the website and review the test data.

  18. Communication & Global Positioning • Data is transferred via GPRS or MMS – Simply Cellular network. • Data is transferred to a satellite via APRS and the location is transmitted to the website. • Palfridge has the co-ordinates of every refrigerator and know its operating status !!!!

  19. Installation & Maintenance Accessory Specs • 2 x 90 watt monocrystalline panels. • Roof mounting brackets and fixtures. • Intermediate 4mm² x 10m cable and plug. • Solar panel placement directions. • Operating Instructions. • Spare parts exploded view and ordering info.

  20. Installation Procedure 1.Open the cover with a screw driver. 2. Undo nylon screw cap and insert cable 3. Insert and push cable 4. Lift clip using screw driver, push cable in and release clip. 6. Close cover 5. Screw back nylon cap to tighten cable. Repeat procedure for connecting other polarity.
