Nottingham Declaration • Updated Dec 2005 • Signed by 270+ Municipalities in the UK • Signing requires commitment from the most senior people • Commits a Council to plan actions within 2 years and to work with partners and communities to address mitigation and adaptation • Advice at the Nottingham Declaration Action Pack

Nottingham Declaration success • more likely to have conducted an inventory of their municipality’s CO2 emissions and have a strategy for council activities. • 75% signatories have an action plan compared to half of municipalities yet to sign. • (29%) of signatories have targets for developing renewable energy in the areas compared to 16% of non signatories • more likely to have an officer dedicated to sustainable energy and climate change - just over half of signatory municipalities (55%), compared to 42% of non signatories. • more likely (78%)to have an politician with a climate change portfolio .

Good Practice • Manage own estate • Targetting 20-40% energy saving target within 20 years,water management - a culture of carbon management • Making a commitment to use microgeneration in schools and other community buildings (30-40% potential nationally) • Funding for renewables Dti The Low Carbon Building Programme and Renewable Energy in Schools scheme • Carbon Trust LA Carbon Management Programme • Procurement –Green Energy- adopt a whole life approach and work with the Council’s supply chain
