  1. a b2 Conservation strategies b1 Create protected public areas reconcile intensive land uses with conservation • We are analyzing case studies in two different land use production systems: • a forestry area (a)in the northeast in the subtropical creeks with the objective of designing a biological corridor and • b) livestock management areas one located in a RAMSAR site(b1) in the Eastern wetlands, and the other in the North of the country (b2) using the endangered pampas deer as a focal species to establish a private conservation area. Methodology Uruguay map indicating the conservation areas. • We proposed to use the following criteria: • identification of indicator species, such as large mammals, to assess conservation status and ecosystem health, • The two pampas deer subspecies are the indicator and focal species to conserve the grassland landscape • 2) establish new production systems and business alternatives using certification schemes, • 3) involve local communities using dissemination campaigns and environmental education to achieve integration with the National Protected Areas System, and • 4) inter and trans-disciplinary cooperation to establish private protected areas and design biological corridors O. bezoarticus arerunguaensis O. bezoarticus uruguayensis Acknowledgments In the current scenario, in which the advance of urbanization and human activities have been accelerating ecosystem fragmentation, it is crucial to integrate conservation actions in private lands devoted to agriculture, livestock and forestry. However to reconcile intensive land uses with conservation it is important to promote holistic relationships to achieve rational and sustainable biodiversity use in private lands.
