Types of viruses: • Viruses • These are the programs which replicate themselves into other programs • E-Mail Viruses • These are transferred via e-mails. • Worms • These find a security hole and copy themselves onto the computer via it. • Trojan Horses • These are not strictly viruses but are programs which, when run on the computer, execute code of a destructive nature

  6. Potential damage can include: • Data being deleted • Computers made unusable • Loss of productivity • Security breaches • Invasion of privacy • Theft of internal information

The most frequent sources of contamination include: • Communication contact with an infected computer • Copying an unknown disk containing a carrier program • Downloading a file or e-mail from the Internet or a bulletin board system • Running an infected Local Area Network program • Booting with an infected disk

  8. How to avoid viruses: • NEVER open an attachment in an email UNLESS you are sure you understand what it is and why it's been sent to you • INSTALL PROTECTION SOFTWARE -- NOW! Once you have it, you will help stop the spread of viruses. • BEWARE OF SPIES, HACKERS & KEY LOGGERS!These are programs that can spy into your computer. It happens when people download a program (such as a game) • Always be careful about what you download. Is it from a trustworthy software manufacturer?

  9. Symptoms of a computer virus: • Programs take longer to load • Excessive disk access times • Unusual error messages • Less memory than usual • Disappearing files • Reduction in disk space

  10. What to do you do if have a computer virus? • The only real way to know if you have a virus on your computer is to install antivirus software such as is available from Norton (available from Symantec), McAfee, or Panda.  

  11. To remove the virus: • First the software must be loaded on your computer. • Then you must run a complete system scan • If a virus is found, the software will let you know and give you various options for cleaning the virus off your computer.
