  2. The environmental statement What is it? Is the main tool of external communication of an EMAS registered organization. The aim of the environmental statement is to provide environmental information to the public and other interested parties regarding the environmental impact and performance and the continual improvement of environmental performance of the organisation. 8. Planning the development of the environmental statement Who are the interested parties? Which are the information needs of the interested parties? customers, suppliers, neighbourhood, contractors, employees, stakeholders, NGOs, local authorities…… but they could all be interested in different kinds of environmental information

  9. Planning the development of the environmental statement what to include in the statement (besides the minimum compulsory contents), how it should be presented, how it should be communicated.

  10. Collecting the information • What do I need from my environmental management system (EMS)? • the environmental policy • the previous objectives and targets • the future objectives and targets • the summary of its activities, products and services • the relationship with other companies or groups • the description of the environmental management system of the organisation • the last environmental aspects assessment and the related impacts • the data from measuring and monitoring activities • the information from the periodical assessment of the legal compliance • others

  11. Collecting the information In relation to the environmental performance reporting, we must guarantee the traceability both of the data and information as it is going to be checked by the environmental verifier

  12. Designing the environmental statement The environmental statement should be clearly and concisely written.  If possible, avoid long and complicated documents as they may not fit the communication needs of the interested parties.  Even if we can use the last information technologies to divulgate the environmental statement, we must be able to provide a printed version for those people who have no access to the information through internet, electronic files, etc.  The EMAS regulation does not establish a specific structure for the environmental statement or the order in which items should be presented. We are free to choose the format and layout that best fits our communication needs, but we have to include all the minimum contents.

  13. Designing the environmental statement

  14. Designing the environmental statement Give the organisation’s location and outline its activities, products and services.

  15. Designing the environmental statement A description of the EMS could be done through a diagram

  16. Designing the environmental statement Environmental aspects and impacts

  17. Designing the environmental statement A description of a process

  18. Designing the environmental statement A description of a process

  19. Designing the environmental statement Objectives and programs.

  20. Designing the environmental statement ? kWh Tons of CO2 equivalent Tons of oil equivalent (toe) ? mg/l ? m3/employee tons mg/l total m2 % ? ? total m3 /working hours m3/tons ? The raw data generated by our EMS can be used in different ways to show our performance

  21. Designing the environmental statement Be sure that the indicators: give an accurate appraisal of the organisations performance; are understandable and unambiguous; allow for year-by-year comparison to assess the development of the environmental performance of the organisation; allow for comparison with sector, national or regional benchmarks as appropriate; allow for comparison with regulatory requirements as appropriate.

  22. Designing the environmental statement We can use the same diagrams to make reference to legal compliance, objectives & targets... Year-by-year comparison

  23. An example of the results... m3 of water saved in 71 EMAS sites between 2004 and 2005, about 10 Olympic swimming pools 24602,86

  24. An example of the results... km2of occupied surface Are about 543 soccer fields (Data: 67 sites in 2006) 3,4 A soccer field = 100 m x 64 m (minimum standard dimensions) But in Barcelona the Camp Nou is 107 m x 72 m!

  25. An example of the results... People working under EMAS in Catalonia, this is like the whole population of Girona & Salt (Data: 72 sites in 2006) 119.234 • People providing environmental added value to our society within their daily work • Working in order to prevent the environmental pollution • Constantly receiving environmental training • Aware of their environmental impacts

  26. Designing the environmental statement Environmental impacts Center 1 Corporate Environmental Statement Environmental impacts Center 2 Environmental impacts Center 3 If we decide for a corporate environmental statement, its structure must ensure that the significant environmental impacts of each site are clearly identified and reported in the corporate statement

  27. Reviewing the environmental statement It might be advisable to appoint an outside person to review and comment on the document when it is complete.
