    27. 2009 HEALTH SYSTEM STUDY OVERVIEW Definition of health system Minimum of two acute-care general hospitals Corporate office or related organization identified on 2008 Cost Report All systems included, regardless of size, ownership, control, religious affiliation, geographic distribution of hospitals Measures reflect aggregated data across the whole system, including CAHs 100 Top Hospitals®: National Scorecard measures adjusted to be meaningful at system level 27

    31. 2009 HEALTH SYSTEM STUDY GENERAL METHODOLOGY Health systems are ranked on each of the included measures Heart Attack (AMI), Heart Failure (HF) and Pneumonia 30 day mortality rates and readmission rates each receive 1/6th weight. All other measures receive a weight of 1. Ranks are summed and the sum is re-ranked to determine each health system’s overall performance Health systems are ineligible to be considered 100 Top benchmark facilities if they have: A high outlier value for Mortality, Complications or PSI (Interquartile Range (IQR) Methodology, using +2 IQR) 31
