  1. iChecked Inc.Blind Spot Detection System (BSDS) • TEAM 8 • Barry Li • Victor Chen • Elyas Sepasi • Aron McKinnon ENSC 305/440 April 15th, 2010

  2. Outline • Introduction • System Overview • Product Design • Budget and Timeline • Future Development • What We Learned • Conclusion • Q&A • Demo

  3. Introduction • Team Members • Motivation • Existing Products • Our Solution

  4. iChecked Team • Barry: CEO • Lead, R&D, Circuit, Documentation • Victor: CFO • R&D, Funding, Purchasing, Circuit, Installation • Elyas: COO • R&D, User Interface, Documentation, Records • Aron: CTO • R&D, Sensors, Purchasing, Documentation

  5. Background • Car lanes next to you • Must shoulder check, but really? • Drivers must be reminded

  6. Motivation • 410,000 lane-changing related accidents annually • Costs • All of us can relate to the danger • Vast number of cars • Good drivers want to drive more safely

  7. Existing Products • Blind spot mirror • 2 mirrors to look at? • Only on very recent models • Not widely available • Other similar products ~$500 • Too much

  8. Our Solution • Increase road safety • Economical • Universal to personal cars • Accurate (rain/snow, night/summer) • Friendly toward all types of users • Seen as a part of the car

  9. System Overview Warning System Sensors

  10. System Overview BSDS checks for car in blind spot. Turn signal is on. Speed is over 30km/h Car found in blind spot, driver is warned. Collision is imminent.

  11. Current State of System

  12. Product Design • Sensors • Processing circuit • Warning system

  13. Sensors • Wide angle (40 degrees) • Should not detect past 3m (do not want to sense vehicles 2 lanes over) • Should be fairly inexpensive • Infrared , Laser, Photo Recognition, Sonar, Ultra Sound • Costly, narrow angle, range issues

  14. Sensors • Ultrasound Sensors • meet our criteria (Wide angle +/- 20 degree, short range 2m, low cost) • Parking Sensor purchased , sensor and driver used. • Easily Installable • Proven Field experience

  15. Sensors • Supposed to work up to 2.5m • Reliable results at 1.5m to 2.0m • Still works for most vehicles in the parallel lane

  16. Proposed Processing stage

  17. Processing Circuitry

  18. Warning System • Audio • Buzzer • Visual • LEDs Discreet and non-distracting

  19. Location

  20. Other Possibilities • Integrating with car audio system • Vibrating steering wheel • Audio “car on left”

  21. Overall Future Improvements • Speedometer / accelerometer • Simulated solution • Sensor quality and range • Improved sensors / receivers • Fit better our needs • Warning System

  22. Budget Under Budget!

  23. Timeline ON Time!

  24. We Learned • Complete cycle of an engineering project • Time management • Working with others • Constructive criticism • Professionalism

  25. Business Opportunity • Affordable product • Large target market • Simple to install & use • Clear & timely warning • Reduce accidents (cost & life)

  26. Conclusion • Set goals • Thorough planning • Team collaboration • Good, better, best • Budget & time management • Goals achieved / useful product

  27. Acknowledgement • ENSC 305 / 440 profs and TAs • Patrick Leung for sensor ideas • Brad Oldham for function specs • Justus Li for working on the car • Dr. Mohammad Sepasi for design specs • ENSC lab resource office for parts • Mark Zhou and others
