  1. Digital Media Project-R4 Dr. Jordan Isailovic Email: jordan@jritechnology.com Web site: http://www.jritechnology.com CPTWG 13 – VII – 2005 Notes are at: http://www.jritechnology.com/DMPR4

  2. Why do I care about the DMP?(Me and Digital Media Project) Me as End user: I love country music; “Fair use” • My home office • My car • My wife's car My Course on CD: “Video Compression and MPEG Technology Fundamentals” * Never sold to any individual, only to companies

  3. The Digital Media ManifestoVision • The Digital Media Manifesto proposes to make an improved Digital Media Experienceeconomically rewarding on a global scale, legitimate for the multiplicity of players on the value chain and satisfactory for end-users, with the ultimate goal of realising a fuller Digital Media Experience. • 2003/09/30; 24 pages

  4. 6th GA meeting: Major results • Adopted 6 documents, Phase I; all public • Adopted WD 1.0 of AD No. 7 • AD #7 - Reference Software • Adopted WD 1.0 of AD No. 1 to 3, Phase II • Issued a Call for Proposals on Mapping of Traditional Rights and Usages to the Digital Space Further details at http://www.dmpf.org/project/ga06/results.html

  5. What is next ?

  6. Abbreviations (TLAs), etc. • IDP - Interoperable DRM Platform • PAV - Portable Audio & Video Devices • SAV - Stationary Audio & Video Devices • TRU - Traditional Rights and Usages • Primitive Functions in IDP-1 WD 1.0 • Identify (Content, License, Device, Domain) • Represent (Content, Rights Expression) • Authenticate (Device) • Manage (Key, Domain) • DMP - Digital Media Project • Process (Encrypt) • Access (License)

  7. Digital Media Project status report (After 6th General Assembly) Information supplied by: Leonardo Chiariglione The Digital Media Project

  8. The Digital Media Project • Launched as Digital Media Manifesto in Jul 2003 • Manifesto published in Sep 2003 • http://www.chiariglione.org/manifesto/dmm.htm • Digital Media Project established in Dec 2003 as a non-profit organisation • http://www.digital-media-project.org/ • The basic DMP position • Digital technologies are an asset of mankind • Creators, intermediaries and end-users should all benefit from them • This goal can be achieved by standardising • Appropriate protocols between value-chain users supporting the functions they execute • At suitably identified interfaces • DMP develops an Interoperable DRM standard The Digital Media Project

  9. Implementing the vision • About DRM standards • There is no such thing as “universal way of doing business with media” • There is no such thing as a “universal DRM system” • There are DRM systems satisfying the needs of specific value chain players • What can be standardised? • Not the protocols for Functions performed in • Existing value-chains (we do not know how today’s value-chains will evolve) • Future value-chains (we do not know what they will look like) • But the protocols for lower-level functions (Primitive Functions) • Existing Functions are combinations of Primitive Functions • Future Functions can be combinations of existing and new Primitive Functions • We must be able to continuously inject innovation into the system! The Digital Media Project

  10. DRM standard as a toolkit • The DMP Technical Specification is called “Interoperable DRM Platform” (IDP) • IDP is a “tool-kit”, i.e. it contains normative specification of elementary technologies (“tools”) implementing Primitive Functions • The IDP Specification is developed in Phases • Phase I (IDP-1): technologies for Portable Audio & Video Devices (PAV) in April 2005 • Phase II (IDP-2): technologies for Stationary Audio & Video Devices (SAV) in October 2005 • Phase III (IDP-3): TBD • IDP is complemented by “Use Cases” and “Value-Chains” • To describe how to assemble IDP tools to build DMP DRM Systems (e.g. PAV and SAV) The Digital Media Project

  11. What has been done in these 18 months? • Primitive Functions identified and their Requirements listed • A set of Portable Audio and Video (PAV) Devices specifications (Phase I) approved in April 2005 • http://www.dmpf.org/open/dmp0430.zip • A set of Stationary Audio and Video (SAV) Devices working drafts (Phase II) approved in April 2005 • Currently under discussion by DMP members • Call for Contributions on Mapping of Traditional Rights and Usages (TRU) to the Digital Space issued in April 2005 • http://www.dmpf.org/open/dmp0409.doc The Digital Media Project

  12. The set of DMP Phase I Approved Documents (IDP-1) The Digital Media Project

  13. Primitive functions supported in IDP-1(in bold) The Digital Media Project

  14. New primitive functions to be supported in IDP-2 (in bold italic) The Digital Media Project

  15. Reference software • DMP is developing reference software for its specification • Reference software license • To the extent possible open source license • Otherwise a license allowing modification and use of software provided conformity with DMP specification is preserved • The DMP reference software for Phase I will have normative value and be released in October 2005 The Digital Media Project

  16. Support of Traditional Rights and Usages in the digital space • In 2004 a large number of Traditional Rights and Usages have been collected and analysed • http://www.dmpf.org/open/dmp0270.zip • A Call for Contributions has been published in April 2005 • http://www.dmpf.org/open/dmp0409.doc • Contributions are due by 15 July 2005 • “Recommended Action on Mapping of Traditional Rights and Usages to the Digital Space” to be published in January 2006 • The target of the Recommended Action are national legislative or regulatory bodies The Digital Media Project

  17. Example TRUs considered in the Call for Contributions The Digital Media Project

  18. Looking forward to GA07 • Venue: Erlangen • Date: 20-22 July 2005 19 July: Study of TRU responses • Host: Fraunhofer IIS The Digital Media Project
