  1. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation And Management At Baystate Medical Center John L. Murray, Jr., CHMM, CSP, CIH Safety Director Baystate Health System Springfield, MA H2E Teleconference

  2. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Solvent Reclamation Baystate Medical Center currently operates 5 solvent management units: Two distillation units (stills); two filters; and, a vial crusher to separate waste methanol and obliterate patient Information. Estimated savings from these operations is $19,000/yr. H2E Teleconference

  3. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center A Brief History BMC began solvent reclamation in 1980. The original still was installed to reclaim a xylene from wax generated during tissue processing. A second still was installed in 1990 to recover ethanol from tissue staining. H2E Teleconference

  4. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Xylene Still – Used to reclaim xylene from a solvent/wax solution. Originally installed in 1980. Product is better than the reagent purchased to replace waste. H2E Teleconference

  5. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center COST AVOIDANCE – Xylene Wax Still Cost avoidance of new product purchase $4,560 480 gallons/yr @ $9.50/gallon Cost avoidance of waste disposal $ 744 480 gallons/yr @ $1.55/gallon ______ $5,304 Initial cost - $15,000. The waste wax is disposed of as a flammable solid. H2E Teleconference

  6. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Ethanol Still – Used to reclaim ethanol. Originally installed in 1990. H2E Teleconference

  7. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center COST AVOIDANCE – Ethanol Still Cost avoidance of new product purchase $1,248 240 gallons/yr @ $5.20/gallon Cost avoidance of waste disposal $ 372 240 gallons/yr @ $1.55/gallon ______ $1,620 Initial cost - $15,000. Waste material disposed of as flammable liquid. H2E Teleconference

  8. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Methanol Filter – Used to reclaim Wright’s Stain. This gravity fed unit hold 6 gallons of stain per fill. Chromatographic analysis of reclaimed product matches new material with one exception. Reclaimed material has a “fruity” odor. Performance of reclaimed material is good. H2E Teleconference

  9. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center COST AVOIDANCE – Methanol Filter Cost avoidance of new product purchase $7,405 500 gallons/yr @ $14.81/gallon Cost avoidance of waste disposal $2,275 500 gallons/yr @ $4.55/gallon ______ $9,680 Initial cost - $1,400. New filter cost - $500. After 10 months, the quality of the is still acceptable. Specific gravity is checked as a measure of quality. The filter is disposed of as a flammable solid. H2E Teleconference

  10. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Ethanol Filter – Used to reclaim ethanol in Cytology. This gravity fed unit holds 15 gallons per fill. Product performance of reclaimed material is good. Specific gravity is measured for quality control. H2E Teleconference

  11. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center COST AVOIDANCE – Ethanol Filter Cost avoidance of new product purchase $1,872 360 gallons/yr @ $5.20/gallon Cost avoidance of waste disposal $ 558 360 gallons/yr @ $1.55/gallon ______ $2,430 Initial cost - $2,000. New Filter Cost - $900. After 6 months, the quality of the is still acceptable. The filter is disposed of as a flammable solid. H2E Teleconference

  12. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Vyleater Vial Crusher – Crushes methanol containing vials to remove liquid and disfigure patient information. H2E Teleconference

  13. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center In 2003, 82,000 vials were processed. Approximately two gallons per week of liquid waste are generated. H2E Teleconference

  14. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center COST AVOIDANCE – Vyleater Vial Crusher Barrel all vials and dispose of as hazardous waste Estimated @ 41 drums/year @ $250/drum $10,250 OR Ergonomic exposure of opening all vials and pouring off the liquid $ !!!!! Initial cost - $20,000. The liquid waste is disposed of as a flammable liquid. The crushed vials are disposed of as regular trash. H2E Teleconference

  15. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center External Influences on Success Air Permits Waste Management Scheme H2E Teleconference

  16. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Questions? H2E Teleconference

  17. Hazardous Waste Minimization - Solvent Recovery Systems and Product Substitution June 11, 2004 Solvent Reclamation and Management\ At Baystate Medical Center Thank you. H2E Teleconference
