  2. Germany and Hitler • Hitler appointed chancellor in January 1933 • Blamed Jews for Germany’s problems • Believed everyone should be same race • Built concentration camps for Jews • Many went into hiding or were forced to live in ghettos • This era was called the holocaust.

  3. Early Years • Born on June 12th, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany • Parents were Edith and Otto Frank; sister was Margot • Loved to play outside and listen to father’s stories • Problems in Germany caused family to move to Amsterdam to escape Hitler

  4. Hiding • Anne received diary on her 13thbirthday • Wrote about hardships of being Jews • In 1942, Margot was called to report for camp duty • Otto Frank immediately started preparing a hiding spot

  5. Secret Annex

  6. Concentration Camp • On August 4th, 1944, a Nazi car showed up at the office • Someone had turned them in • The family was sent to concentration camps • Soon the members of the secret annex were transported to Auschwitz • Otto Frank was separated from his girls

  7. Anne and Margot • Sent to Bergen-Belsen • Margot gets typhus • Anne catches disease • Dies in March 1945
