When confirmation follows, explanatory rite replaced by: N., be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen

  7. II. Lumen Gentium Chapter 1 - Trinitarian Perspective • FATHER calls all: prefiguring of Church from all time • Through SON - all sent on mission images to speak about Church (threefold munera) 1. Kingdom: Shepherd/King 2. Tillage of God: Prophet 3. Temple: Priest • Through the SPIRIT all called (vocation) to communion: in truth, love and mercy - all called through baptism into Trinity and sent on mission

  8. Institutional Nature of Church "But the society structured with the hierarchical organs and the Mystical Body of Christ, are not to be considered as two realities, nor are the visible assembly and the spiritual community, nor the earthly Church and the Church enriched with heavenly things; rather they form one complex reality which coalesces from a divine and human element."

  9. People of GodLumen Gentium ch. 2Vocation and Mission Vocation • call to communion -“to be a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a purchased people” §9 • “all the faithful, scattered throughout the world, are in communion with each other in the Holy Spirit....” §13 • communion of “life, charity and truth” §12 • “They [all baptized Christians] are consecrated by baptism, in which they are united with Christ” §15

  10. People of GodLumen Gentium ch. 2Vocation and Mission Mission "sent forth into the whole world as the light of the world and the salt of the earth" “The obligation of spreading the faith is imposed on every disciple of Christ, according to his/her state” §17 – due to charism and office Threefold munera • Priesthood of Faithful - liturgy as §10 • Prophetic office - sensus fidelium §12 • Kingly office - diversity yet unity §13

  11. Definition of Church Society entered into through Baptism given visibility through "1) profession of faith 2) the sacraments and 3) eccesiastical government and 4 ) communion" (LG II,14) = (1) teach, (2) sanctify and (3) govern = missio +(4) communio=vocatio

  12. Hierarchical StructuresLumen Gentium ch. 3 Threefold division -Antiochene model : episcopoi, presbyteroi, diakonoi -vocation of community -others share "in degrees of participation in this ministry" basis for collaborative ministry

  13. Descending Order of Ministry "Bishops, therefore, with their helpers, the priests and deacons, have taken up the service of the community, presiding in place of God over the flock, whose shepherds they are, as teachers for doctrine, priestsfor sacred worship, and ministers for governing" (Lumen Gentium II,20)

  14. Bishop As having “fullness of orders” Specific vocation and mission of episcopacy • Vocation - communion bond of unity, charity and peace (sometimes alone, other times in council) • Mission - by means of threefold munera exercised in "hierarchical communion" + teach (LG III, 25) + sanctify (LG III, 26) + rule (LG III, 27)

  15. Priests "co-workers" or collaborators with bishops "called to preach Gospel, teach to shepherd the faithful and govern to celebrate divine worship" sanctify (LGIII, 28)

  16. Deacons Ministry of service - diakonia Share communion with bishops and priests Mission not based on authority, but on service

  17. The LaityLumen Gentium - ch. 4 Linguistic difficulty laos = people "faithful" "non-ordained"

  18. Specificity of Vocation They (laity) are in their own way made sharers in the priestly, prophetic and kingly functions of Christ; and they carry out for their part the mission of the whole Christian people in the church and in the world" (LG IV, 31) "Due to the special circumstances of our time the foundations of this doctrine must be more thoroughly examined" (LG IV, 30)

  19. III. Christifideles Laici:Vocation and Mission of the Laity in the Church and in the World Twenty Years after the Second Vatican Council "A new aspect to the grace and dignity coming from baptism is here introduced: The lay faithful participate for their part, in the threefold mission of Christ as priest, prophet and king ... " Christifideles Laici, 14

  20. Christifideles Laici In the wake of the Second Vatican Council, at the beginning of my pastoral ministry my aim was to emphasize forcefully the priestly, prophetic and kingly dignity of the entire people of God ... The Second Vatican Council has reminded us of the mystery of this power and of the fact that the mission of Christ — priest, prophet-teacher, king — continues in the Church. Everyone, the whole people of God, shares in this threefold mission" Christifideles Laici, 14

  21. Mission Elaboration of threefold munera "Sharers in the priestly, prophetic and kingly mission of Jesus Christ" rights and obligations attached places question of munera not in terms of authority or privilege, but in terms of service and obligation

  22. Vocation "The call to holiness is rooted in baptism and proposed anew in other sacraments, principally the eucharist." "We come to a full sense of the dignity of the lay faithful if we consider the prime and fundamental vocation that the Father assigns to each of them in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit: the vocation of holiness, that is, the perfection of charity. Holiness is the greatest testimony of the dignity conferred on a disciple of Christ" (CL 16)

  23. Diverse yet Complementary Ministries "All the members of the people of God — clergy, men and women, the lay faithful— are laborers in the vineyard. At one and the same time they all are the goal and subjects of church communion as well as of participation in the mission of salvation. Every one of us possessing charisms and ministries, diverse yet complementary, works in the one and the same vineyard of the Lord" (CL 55)

  30. Consequences for Ministry 1. Shift in meaning of ministry since Vatican II • from trickle down idea to grass roots ministry 2. Shift in theology of ministry • from pragmatic necessity to baptismal vocation and mission • all baptized Christians have responsibility and obligation to work for the upbuilding of the Body of Christ 3. Baptism as Fundamental Sacrament of Vocation • All other choices in life are further delineations of the fundamental baptismal vocation and mission.
