  1. Is the advancement in modern technology and food a factor in the rise of diabetes? Hattie Pastirik

  2. Why am I interested? • Since the age of 14, my oldest brother, Dallas, has suffered from type 1 diabetes • First noticed when he would drink 10 glasses of sweet tea and lost weight • Since that day my mother, Sharon, has been working in Human Resources at Novo Nordisk • Novo Nordisk is a global healthcare company with 89 years of innovation and leadership in diabetes care.

  3. What exactly is diabetes? • Diabetes is when the pancreas creates too much sugar for the blood. • Insulin is used to regulate sugar in the bloodstream and stores glucose for energy. • There are two different types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2 diabetes. • Type 1 (juvenile diabetes) stays for life • Usually occurs before the age of 20 • The cause is currently unknown and it is not hereditary • Type 2 diabetes (adult onset) develops overtime from bad diet • This is curable with healthy lifestyle changes

  4. How does obesity relate? • Since 1991 obesity has increased over 74% • Since 1991 diabetes has increased over 61% • Currently, over 44 million Americans are obese • 17 million of these people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes • How did they develop type 2? • Unhealthy lifestyles • Bad diet • Poor exercise

  5. We’ve become more technology-dependent • 107 million households use cars for their daily transportation, leaving only 8% of households without vehicles • In 1950 only 50 million people owned cars • Children being active vs. being inactive • Technology has become a companion • 10% of preschoolers are now considered obese while 15% of children 6-19 years old are considered obese.

  6. Number of Fast Food restaurants in the 1950s

  7. Solutions and Preventions • There is no known way to help prevent or rid of type 1 diabetes. The best thing you could do for your body is to keep a good eye on your sugar levels. • Intensive lifestyle changes are needed to rid of type 2 diabetes • Choose foods that are low in fat and calories • At least 30 minutes of daily activity (walking, biking, etc.) • Losing any excess body fat: ideal to around 5 to 10 percent of body mass reduces your risk • If type 2 is present your insulin can help rid of the condition, as long with doing the above

  8. Personal Struggles/Successes • Strengths: • I became more informed on my brothers condition • I accurately related the rise in obesity and the rise in diabetes • Struggles: • Sorting through the information • To find different information

  9. Link and product • My product consisted of creating a donation website that goes towards diabetes research • I also got an assembly group together to participate in the JDRF Walk for the Cure 2012 • Promotes good health and exercise

  10. My Product:

  11. Conclusion: • I concluded that our dependence on modern day technology and the convenience of fast food restaurants is a direct factor of the rise in diabetes. • The rise in type 1 diabetes comes directly from the condition of type 2 diabetes worsening

  12. My Future: • I learned what it takes to do a project that requires community involvement. • Leadership Skills • Was this worthwhile? • Of course! Raising money for a cause is always worthwhile • What did I learn about myself? • That I have high expectations of myself and other people, sometimes too high. • I like to get involved • Deadlines are my life savers

  13. Thank you for your time! Can I answer any of your questions?
