  2. Know How Molecular Defoamers Work The defoamer should overcome the stabilizing effect of the surfactants and remove the air. These are formulated to be conflicting with the surfactant layer interface. Defoamers are low-surface-tension liquids, having controlled incompatibility or insolubility, positive entering coefficient to enter the lamella and positive spreading coefficient to spread across the lamella. Defoamers should be distributed as hydrophobic droplets in the formula.

Once the defoamer droplet spreads across the lamella, it disturbs the surfactant stabilization, letting the water to drain from the lamella, resulting in thinning of the bubble layer and eventual breaking of the bubble. Another key characteristic of defoamer, in addition to the surface tension for effective performance of defoamer, is that the defoamer can be spread in the liquid being defoamed to the correct and effective droplet size.

Five main methods of defoaming activity: • Hydrophobic solid • In-situ formation of hydrophobic solids • Competition for surfactant • Low-surface-tension liquids • Antagonistic surfactants/polymers. Molecular defoamers fall into antagonistic surfactants/polymers. This technology is successful because to form a rigid film rather than an elastic film in the lamella wall, the defoaming molecule interacting with other surfactants in the coating. This is achieved by a repulsive interaction occurring between the surfactant chains.

  5. Thus, the lamella area surrounding the bubble does not stretch and is more prone to burst open and release the air. As a result, the difficulty in finding effective and efficient defoamers is to balance this incompatibility needed in the coating system, with the defoamer’s ability to overcome the stabilizing effect of surfactants, without causing any defects in the coating system, such as craters, crawling, colorant separation, etc. This is the way molecular defoamer work to go against surfactants in a paint coating.
