  1. CDMA Development Group TSG-S Feature DefinitionforWireless Local Loop Rick L. Willis CDG WLL Technical Team 041400

  2. Base Station Wireless Switch What is the Wireless Local Loop feature? • Local Loop provided wirelessly • Alternative to the exclusively wired local loop • Flexible & rapid deployment option in contrast to the purely wired local loop • Comprised of fewer maintenance points • Not limited to a single network topography • Supported by numerous wireless devices • WLL supports Mobility option • Supports co-existence of numerous vertical features E1/T1

  3. Wire Line Switch What is Local Loop? • Subscriber dial tone • BORSCHT functionality • Battery feed suppling dc to the local loop • Overvoltage protection to limit or isolate foreign voltages on the local loop • Ringing voltage to the local loop & includes answer detection • Signaling of hook status (on-hook & off-hook) (defined in IS-2000-A) • Coding conversion of analog to digital and digital to analog via the codec • Hybrid conversion of the 2-wire bi-directional local loop to a 4-wire path with separate, unidirectional transmit & receive circuits. Performs impedance matching of the local loop to provide echo cancellation • Test access & test of the local loop RJ-11

  4. Network Feature Server Gateway Local End Office Base Station Base Station Base Station Wireless Switch Wireless Switch Network Topography Options FR/ATM/IP E1/T1 Digital Loop Carrier (V5.2 or TR303) Access Controller E1/T1 Traditional Trunk Options (ANSI/CCITT ISUP, R1/R2 MF, etc) E1/T1

  5. ... ... Wireless Device Options • Traditional Mobile Station (MS) • Network Interface Unit (NIU) • Portable Fixed Subscriber Unit • Docking Station Unit • Outdoor Network Interface Unit (NIU) RJ-11 RJ-11 RJ-11

  6. Mobility Options • No Mobility • Limited Mobility • Full Mobility

  7. Vertical Feature Options • Analog Facsimile • Call Forwarding • Call Transfer • Call Waiting • Calling Party Identification • Circuit Switched Data • Last Call Return • Limited Service Area • Message Waiting • Restricted Access • Short Message Service • Three-Way Calling • User Zone • Others ...

  8. Service Provider Control of the Feature • Wireless Device • Device Type: switch provisioned & requesting Wireless Local Loop at registration • No Mobility • Limited Mobility • Full Mobility • Network (Optional) • Device Type: provisioned Wireless Local Loop • No Mobility • Limited Mobility • Full Mobility

  9. Wireless Local Loop Feature Characteristics • Wireless Local Loop • Dial Tone provided to the Calling Subscriber at Call Origination • Signaling of Hook Status to the Serving System for use in Call Control and application of appropriate Call Treatments • On-hook • Off-hook • Stuck-off-hook
