  2. Occupational Health at John Lewis • Employs approximately 69,000 people • 28 Branches each with their own OHA • Role: • Promote Health and Wellbeing • Absence Management • Safety Risk Management • Incident Reporting • RGN, Specialist OH Qualification and Safety Qualification.

History of OH within John Lewis • 1929 John Spedan Lewis, founder of the Partnership’s experiment in industrial democracy • Vision of ‘Health, Wealth and Happiness’ for all Partners • Pre NHS • Provision of medical services at work • Nurse role changed with the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

  4. Current Occupational Health Service • Employer of Distinction • Specialist OH Nurses and Physicians • Physiotherapy • Podiatry • Counselling • Additional specialist training (OH Admin) • Wellbeing Initiatives.

Well-being initiatives • Know Your Numbers • Cholesterol tests • Health checks for 40-74 year olds through Norfolk PCT • Timberhill Health Centre • Aim to prevent CVD and associated ill health • Partners able to attend health assessment in working time • Lifestyle and referral to appropriate advisor.

  6. Sport in the Workplace • Partners in Sport • Leisure Learning • Subsidised sporting events • Jive classes • Pilates • Scuba Diving and Ski-ing taster sessions • Inter-Branch and departmental sporting challenges

Managing Absence • Proactive approach • Education and support for Managers • Managing stress in the workplace workshops • Managing Absence • Stress risk assessment – prevent workplace stress disorders • Risk register – prevent injuries and workplace ill health • Specialist Manual Handling training • Bradleys Manual handling (Store) • Delivery Drivers (SvB)

Managing Absence • OH works closely with Personnel, Registry Line Management and Partner • Prevent absence from occurring as much as able • Keep close contact with Partner during absence and offer appropriate support • Work closely with GP • Phased return to work programmes • Modified duties and activities • Review regularly • Fit Note

  10. Finally…………… • John Lewis OH service continues to reflect the changes in the business whilst continuing to encompass the spirit of the Founder back in 1933 when health care was first introduced to the Partnership.
