  4. Chewing Food is chewed and mixed with saliva in the mouth. When we swallow, it travels through the esophagus to the stomach

  5. Digestion in the stomach The stomach produces gastric juices. These juices mix with food in stomach. They break up the food and turn into a pulp.

  6. Digestion in the small intestine The food pulp passes from the stomach into the small intestine. The liver, pancreas and intestine produce juices. These juices mix with the pulp and separate the nutrients from the rest of the food.

  7. Absorption The small intestine is responsible for absorption. Nutrients pass into the bloodstream through the small intestine. The blood then carries the nutrients to all parts of the body.

  8. Excretion After absorption, the rest of the food passes into the large intestine. The food parts that cannot be used by the body are turned into feces. Feces is expelled from the body through the anus.
