Health and Safety Updates • Several security issues in engineering complex • Thefts, attempted B/E, and people scouting for “opportunities” • Trying to gain access under guise of meeting a room occupant • Best strategy: Make the person wait in hall until the intended meeting contact has arrived • If in doubt, call Campus Police at 82222 immediately (don’t wait) • Keep doors locked! • Faculty has now instituted building patrols during evenings, overnight, and weekends • People may be asked to provide ID to justify their presence

Health and Safety Updates • ERFs expired either July 31 or Aug 31 (summer students) • ALL continuing staff/students must re-submit forms for extension, or new forms if their work has materially changed • A new ERF is needed whenever a new project is undertaken, or there are modifications to research protocols

  4. Health and Safety Updates • Fire Drill Oct 4 • Generally well done • Recognition of alarm an issue • Not a BELL • Do not re-enter building until all-clear is communicated at 200 College Street entrance.

Safety System Inspections • The researcher should test safety systems in the lab on a regular basis • Verify that the fumehood and ventalertare working before conducting experiments!! • Test the eyewash • Check other monitoring systems (e.g., CO detectors, radiation detectors, etc.) before conducting experiments!! • Check integrity of water recirculation systems (hoses, clamps, etc.) before each experiment, especially if equipment will operate overnight/unattended

Globally Harmonized System (GHS) • "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals“ • Harmonizes worldwide labelling and classification of chemical hazards/products • Currently in various stages of implementation worldwide • In force in U.S. since May 2012 • In force in EU since Dec 2010 for pure substances, and June 2015 for mixtures • Updates to Canadian regulations still pending

  7. GHS • Will likely lead to changes to labels and physical/health hazard classifications • New pictograms on labels • Signal word communicating key hazard • 16 section format for Safety data sheets (SDSs) – replaces 9 section MSDS WHMIS format

New Health Hazard Classes: • acute toxicity • skin corrosion/irritation • serious eye damage/eye irritation • respiratory or skin sensitization • germ cell mutagenicity • carcinogenicity • reproductive toxicity • specific target organ toxicity - single exposure • specific target organ toxicity - repeated exposure • aspiration hazard
