Prefixes and suffixes. Prefix. A prefix is a letter or a group of letters added to the beginning of a word. It changes the meaning of a word. For example; Re Un Each of these letter group means something. For example; Re =again or back Un =not.

  1. Prefixes and suffixes

  2. Prefix • A prefix is a letter or a group of letters added to the beginning of a word.

  3. It changes the meaning of a word. For example; • Re • Un Each of these letter group means something. For example; • Re=again or back • Un=not

  4. So when you add these prefixes to a word..... • It changes the meaning of the word!!! Look at the root word do re+do=redo ! This means to doagain. Lets do some more!!!

  5. read re+read= reread play re+play= Replay paint re+paint= repaint write re+write= rewrite

  6. happy un+happy= unhappy lock un+lock= unlock true un+true= untrue fair un+fair= unfair

  7. Add the prefix ‘re’ or ‘un’ to these root words! re call un finished un pack re fit un re arrange re pair

  8. The prefix ‘re’ • Danny had to refill the bucket. • The T.V. showed an action replay.

  9. The prefix ‘un’ • My mum was unwell on the weekend with a bad cold. • Jerry seemed unhappy to see car window broken. lets make more sentences with the prefix un and re

  10. Add the prefix ‘dis’ to these root words! dis coloured dis trust dis like dis dis order dis please dis approve

  11. The prefix ‘dis’ • Sally disagreed with Tom over who threw the snowball. • Can you disable the alarm? Can you make more sentences using prefix Dis

  13. Suffix • A suffix is a word part added to the end of a root word.

  14. It also changes the meaning of a word. For example; • -able • -less • -s Each of these letter group means something. For example; • able= capable • less=without • s= more than one

  15. power power+less= powerless hope hope+less= hopeless actor actor+s= actors quiet quiet+ly= quietly

  16. slow slow+ly= slowly sudden sudden+ly= suddenly colour colour+ed= coloured paint paint+ing= painting

  17. Add the suffix ‘ly’ and ‘less’to these root words! nice ly care less quick ly ly ly fine less motion loving ly

  18. The suffix‘-ly’ and ‘-less’ • Mum nicely served food to all the guests. • My cousin Amina is always expressionless when it is a surprise. • I feel lonely without my brother. • I do not want to be a careless person.
