  2. Hawks and Doves • Hawks: Americans in support of the Vietnam war. • “Here we are at the height of our power. The most powerful nation in the world. And yet we’re afraid to use that power” - General Curtis LeMay • Doves: Americans who opposed the war. • War unnecessary for national security • War could result in uses of nuclear weapons • All war is bad

Vietnam War This was the longest war the united states ever participated in went from 1957 to 1975 North and South Vietnam were divided into two parts north was communist and south was non communist. It was a proxy war fair because the U.S and S.U were ruling through lower powered countries to get what they thought was right.

Effects After the War was Over This was a very costly war and not only did it affect those in battle but also people all over the world • Over 58000 dead 150,000 wounded. • Many veterans suffered from post turmeric stress disorder and also fear of developing daises. • Stereotypes-bitter homeless dramatic

  5. Chemicals and Drug Use • Approximately 20 million gallons of herbicides were used to killed plants/vegetation so enemies could not hide as well. So much exposure to these chemicals caused health problems • People and children suffered from cancers disabilities • Children of the third generation suffered from malformations and defects of the immune and nervous system.

Arab Oil Embargo • U.S. becomes dependent on foreign oil. • Several Arab nations cut off oil—punishment • OPEC increases oil prices to about 400% • Triggered an energy crisis 1973-74 • Hardships in some parts of the country • People feared the U.S. was running out of energy • Arab Nations lifted the embargo in March ‘74

  7. Watergate Scandal The Scandal: • 5 men from Creep break-in to Democrat Office • McCord, 1 of the 5, admits White House participation • Nixon eventually turned over tapes and resigned The Effect: • Americans started to doubt the integrity of their government

Fads and Fashions Yellow- anxious Blue- happy Purple- moody Black-down, confused Red- love, passion Clear- emotionless Green- easily amused White- contemplation • Invented by Harvey Ball • Insurance company experiencing a merge • Keep employees in good spirits • 1972- over 50 million smiley buttons created

  12. MUSIC • Many types of music developed and became popular during the 70s. • These include • Disco • Punk • R&B and Urban • Reggae • Rock • Unfortunately, in the 70s many music legend such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Elvis Presley died.

  13. Disco • Really started with the movie Saturday Night Fever, which had the effect of setting off disco mania in the U.S. • As quickly as it rose, it fell. • Popular disco artists: • BeeGees • Donna Summer • ABBA

  14. Punk • Some popular artists include: • The Ramones • Blondie

  15. R&B and Urban • Some popular artists include: • James Brown • Stevie Wonder • Earth, Wind, and Fire • Jackson 5

  16. Reggae • Some popular artists include: • Bob Marley • Peter Tosh

  17. Rock • Rock music was one of the most prominent types of music during the 1970s. • Just some of the many rock artists include: • Led Zeppelin • Deep Purple • Kiss • Aerosmith • Rush • Pink Floyd

Film • Blockbusters, spectacular films that drew huge audiences, started to evolve more in the 1970s. • Many of the blockbusters that were popular then are still popular now. • These include: • The Godfather (1972) • The Exorcist (1973) • The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) • Rocky (1976) • Halloween (1978)

  19. Film • Science fiction movies that used special effects became very popular and contributed to two of the biggest pictures of the decade: • Jaws (1975) • Star Wars (1977)

Music in Film • Music was a huge aspect of every part of the 70s including film. • Saturday Night Fever: stared John Travolta and the music of the BeeGees and it introduced Disco to middle America • Grease: a very popular movie that recalled the world, and most importantly the music, of the 1950s.

Television • Television was also very popular in the 1970s • Sitcoms such as Happy Days and The Brady Bunch, followed around friends and families and their everyday lives. • Saturday Night Live, which is still currently very popular, was a show that revolved around a series of sketches parodying American culture and politics. • SNL launched the careers of many comedians and actors.

  26. 1970’s Inventions 1970’s Inventions • The 70’s produced few outstanding technology breakouts but two of the most important were Microprocessor and supersonic aircraft, they changed the way people lived.

  27. Pollutions increase • Population scales went up • Series of industrial accidents happened • The study of ecology and conservation became popular

  28. Top 10 inventions of the 1970’s • Ink jet printer- this made it possible to print what you typed • PONG-first video game • Photocopying-this made the way for Atari, Nintendo, • Sony, and Microsoft. • Video cassette- made it possible To record play and pause a movie.
