  1. DISPERSION OF HIGH SOLIDS CONTENT SLURRIES Akshay Rajopadhye1, Surbhi Mittal1, Dr. BrijMoudgil1, and Dr. Hasan El Shall1, Particle Engineering Research Center1, University of Florida; Gainesville, Florida-32611 OBJECTIVE: Develop a predictive model for the rheological behavior of concentrated suspensions with the dispersants. INTELLECTUAL MOTIVATION INDUSTRIAL RELEVANCE RESEARCH APPROACH Determine the effect of following on the microstructure (particle packing) within the concentrated suspensions: Develop the knowledge base and predictive methodologies to control the dispersion behavior of highly concentrated particulate systems CHALLENGE Selecting the appropriate dispersants on scientific basis for optimal rheological properties of concentrated suspensions. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS & DISCUSSION SUMMARY SYSTEM • Viscosity of concentrated slurry depends on dosage and type of dispersant • The slurries exhibit Shear thinning behavior as seen from the viscosity measurement KE220 (2.5mg/g solid) KE284 (2.5mg/g solid) FUTURE WORK • Evaluate various dispersants for their effect on the dispersion stability & rheological properties of concentrated suspensions • Develop predictive methodologies for selection of dispersants for optimum suspension properties • Testing methodology: • Rheology: Measurement of Shear Viscosity (η), Storage Modulus (G’) & Loss Modulus ( G”) • Yield Stress Measurement G’ & G” values indicate the formation of solid-like structure in suspensions leading to increased viscosity.
