CIHR Open Operating Grant • Sept 2012 Competition • Largest CIHR open call for proposals • Funds 400 new grants/ competition (minimum) • Funding term • typically 3 – 5 years (min 1 yr) • Up to $12.5M over 5 years (or $2.5 million / year) • Two phases: • Registration • Application • Online application submission through ResearchNet RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012

Eligibility • Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) – Mandatory Common CV submission • Independent Researcher • Autonomous regarding research activities • Holds an academic or research appointment • Responsible for the proposed activities • Administrative and financial responsibility for the grant • Principal Applicants – Mandatory Common CV submission • Independent Researcher • Shares responsibility with the NPA for the direction of the proposed activities • Co-applicants (one of the following) – Mandatory Common CV submission • An independent researcher or a knowledge user or a trainee (undergrad / grad student, postdoc, post-health professional degree) • Contribute to the proposed activities • Collaborators – Common CV not required • Provide a specific service (e.g., access to equipment, training in a specialized technique, statistical analysis, access to a patient population, etc.) RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012

Application phase Electronic Submission to Research Services RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012 Electronic submission to RSO for CIHR OOGP ONLY No paper application submission required • Deadlines • Internal Full Administrative Review • September 3rd, 2012 4:00pm* • Submit complete application to Research Services via ResearchNet (*Sept 3rd is a statutory holiday, the deadline date will be the next working day – Sept 4th. ) • Internal Best Effort Administrative Review – • September 13rd, 2012 Noon (2:00pm EDT) • CIHR Deadline • September 17th, 2012

Application: Online Submission to Research Services RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012 • 2012 CIHR Funding Application Approvals Form • Do NOT upload this form to ResearchNet • To initiate the review process Research Services requires both: • Application submission on ResearchNet • Scanned Research Funding Application Approvals form • Send to: uofc.cihr@ucalgary.ca

Application Electronic Submission Process on ResearchNet RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012 • NPA submits the complete application to Research Services through ResearchNet • Research Services completes the administrative review: • Feedback sent to NPA and if necessary: • Application is returned for revision • NPA completes revision and submits it through ResearchNet • Research Services submits the application to CIHR • Application does not require any changes Research Services submits the application to CIHR • ResearchNet automatically generates an e-mail for the NPA confirming that application has been submitted to CIHR.

Application: Introduction to ResearchNet • Task 5: Enter Budget Information and Supporting Documents • Since September 15, 2011, the Tri-Council agencies existing regulations on min/max stipend levels paid to trainees (students and postdocs) from grants no longer apply • Compensation for research staff and research trainees should be in accordance with the rates/practices used in your Department or Faculty • Non-discretionary benefits can also be requested RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012

Application: Introduction to ResearchNet • Task 5: Enter Budget Information and Supporting Documents (ctd) • Budget module value in the “Equipment” line must be $0 CIHR defines Research Equipment as: • Any item (or interrelated collection of items comprising a system) of non-expendable tangible property, having a useful life of more than 1 year and a cost of $2,000 or more, which is used wholly or in part for research. • Note: all three conditions must be met for an item to be considered equipment • To be considered materials or supplies an item must meet only one of the following conditions: • expendable tangible property; or, • useful life of 1 year or less; or • a cost of less than $2,000. • For example, a laptop computer that costs less than $2,000 would be considered "materials or supplies" and therefore can be requested under that budget heading RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012

Application: Introduction to ResearchNet • Task 5: Enter Budget Information and Supporting Documents (ctd) • Budget Justification: • Ensure amounts given in justification are consistent with values listed in budget detail module, and that all requests are fully justified • Cost Quotations / Cost Support Letters • For service contracts costing more than $10,000 and up to $25,000 attach at least one cost quotation; • For single service contracts costing more than $25,000, attach to the quote a letter from the Authorized Official at the Institution Paid attesting that the service contract is not currently available, plus at least two competitive quotes. Application: Introduction to ResearchNet • Task 9: Print, Scan and Upload Signature Pages • Upload all signature pages (including Routing Slip) to ResearchNet, in the following order: • Routing Slip • CIHR Applicant Signatures Page(s) – (if applicable) • CIHR Institutional Signature Page - this page must be left blank; NO SIGNATURES (NPA and the Institution paid) are required on this page • Task 11: Consent and Submit Application through ResearchNet • This submits the application electronically through ResearchNet to Research Services for internal review and approval. Grant Review Process – Application Stage A Research Services Office review provides: Three key elements of a full administrative review Items necessary for institutional approval Eligibility (including departmental & faculty-level approval) University of Calgary commitment or risk Goal: Allows University to sign off on application Completeness Program guidelines followed All mandatory elements included Correct formatting instructions Goal: Avoid rejection on administrative grounds Other Evaluation criteria addressed Budget is well-justified and follows guidelines Application clear, well-organized and error-free Goal: Improved quality of application Best Efforts = Minimum review needed for approval RESEARCH SERVICES – AUGUST 2012
