  1. Do Now This photograph was taken of a cruise ship dumping into the ocean. In one paragraph in your English journal, write what you think the attitude of the person(s) responsible for this dumping is ? How do feel the people on board would feel about it? How do think the people on the beach would feel about it? Make sure your paragraph has a good topic sentence, good supporting detail, and a good concluding sentence.

  7. Setting In a Text Box, write a good sentence telling what page and paragraph of the book where you find proof of the setting of Flush. Then, write one sentence about the time and a sentence about the place of Flush.

  8. Point of View 1st Person Point of View A character in the story is the narrator; can only see/tell personal thoughts/feelings and what he/she is told by others; uses the pronouns - I, me, we/us, my/mine.

Point of View 3rd Person Point of View The narrator is someone outside the story; not a character in the story; three types: 3rd Person Objective – The narrator reports only what they see/hear. 3rd Person Limited – The narrator sees into the mind of one other character. 3rd Person Omniscient – The narrator is all-knowing and can enter the minds of more than one of the characters.

  15. Theme The point the author is trying to get across; underlying meaning of the story; an opinion on a topic; not all works have one.

  16. Characterization The way the author portrays the characters, their personalities, and their physical appearance; what they say or do.
