  1. COORDINATIONCHEMISTRY QUIZ KEY (20 points)

  2. 1. (6 points) Consider the coordination complex compound [Ru(Br)2(en)(NH3)2]NO3. a. What is the oxidation state of Ru?______3+_ b. What is the coordination number of Ru?_6__ c. How many ions does it form in water?___2__ 2. (2 points) If [Cr(H2O)6]+3 is violet, what color is [Cr(CN)6]-3 most likely to be?__yellow__ 3. (2 points) Which compound will absorb the shorter wavelength of light: [Co (F)6]-3 [Co(CN)6]-3

  3. 4. Using the octahedral complex [Mo(H2O)6]2+ a. (4 points) Draw the correct crystal field diagram for this complex including the correct number and arrangement of electrons. “LABEL THE ORBITALS” Two orbitals would be higher in energy: (dx2-y2,dz2) with one electron in one of these(up)! Three orbitals would be lower in energy: (dxy, dxz, dyz) each receiving one electron(up)! b. (2 points) Is this complex paramagnetic or diamagnetic? paramagnetic Why? Because there are four electrons spinning in the same direction(up) the complex would be (paramagnetic)!

  4. 5. (1 point) If a complex ion appears red in a solution, it is probably absorbing which color of light? a. green b. orange c. blue d. violet 6. (1 point) EDTA complexes have a coordination number of: a. 2 b. 4 c. 6

  5. 7. (2 points) Complexes of zinc metal ions (Zn2+) are almost always colorless, whereas complexes of other transition metal ions are usually highly colored. Explain why. Since Zn2+ complexes have a full compliment of 10 spin-paired, d-shell electrons, it is not possible for electrons to move from the lower three split d-orbitals to the upper two split d-orbitals. Since the absorption and emission of light depends upon this movement of d-shell electrons, no visible light can be absorbed or emitted! The orbitals are completely full with nowhere for the electrons to go: “No Light Absorbed or Emitted” = “Colorless!”
