  1. Character Journal Write two quotes from Chapter 1 that describe each boy. Be sure to reinforce the page number after each quote.

  2. Symbolism: The Conch and the Scar There are many symbols in the Lord of the Flies. Two main ones are introduced in Chapter 1: the conch and the scar. This activity will help you to notice details about the conch and the scar that you may have overlooked during your first reading. Scan chapter 1 with your GROUP and write down everything you can find about either the conch and/or the scar. Include page numbers for easy reference.

  3. Create this chart with your findings…

  4. Foreshadowing: Jack’s Violent Nature Passage about Jack: “He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy. He looked round fiercely, daring them to contradict. Then they broke out into the sunlight and for a while they were busy finding and devouring food as they moved down the scar toward the platform and the meeting.”

  5. Questions… • Rewrite the passage in your own words. • How do you think Jack feels right now? • Why do you think Jack feels that way? • Do you think he’ll be brave enough to kill a pig next time? Why or why not?
