  2. What is the purpose of Special Products and factors? • These are small steps to get to the “big picture” • Engineers use part of this process to keep measurements proportioned. • EXAMPLE: Carpet or flooring in a large area

  3. Greatest common factor • 8ax and 4ay 1.) What is the highest # that • can go in 8 and 4? • 2.) 8: 1, 2, 4,8 4: 1, 4 • 3.) The highest # is 4 • 4.) What are the common variables? • only a • 5.) GCF is 4a

  4. Remember… • Examples #5 and #6 on the “GCF“ page and #1 and #2 on “Factor Completely” page you must do the following…. • Find the GCF and then divide. When dividing, subtract exponents! • EXAMPLE : 10x5+ 5x2 → GCF = 5x • 10x5+ 5x2 • 5x 5x • FINAL ANSWER: 5x (2x4 + x)

  5. FACTOR COMPLETELY • Look for perfect factors! • EXAMPLE: 64 – t2 • (8 – t) (8 + t)

  6. F O I LFIRST , OUTSIDE, INSIDE, LAST • Use arrows…. • First Outside • ( 6t – 5) (6t + 5) • Inside • Last • First: 6t * 6t = 36t2 Inside: -5 * 6t = -30t • Outside: 6t * 5 = 30t Last: -5 * 5 = -25 • Combine like terms: 36t2 + 30t – 30t -25 • Final Answer: 36t2 -25

  7. Word problems • #6 James has a triangle with a height of 2r + 4 millimeters and a base of 3r + 1 millimeters. What is the area of James’s triangle? • A = ½ bh • A = ½ (3r +1) (2r +4) FOIL • A= ½ (6r2 +14r + 2r +4) COMBINE LIKE TERMS • A = ½ (6r2 + 16r + 4) REDUCE…CUT IN ½ or DIVIDE BY 2 • A = 3r2 + 8r + 2 ANSWER!

  8. What You need to do • 1.) Work together and be positive. • 2.) Be sure to have input with each question. • 3.) Ask your group questions if you are not sure about something. • 3.) Make sure you have all materials: • - Calculator • - Review Packet • - Pencil or Pen • 4.) Choose a problem to complete on the board (when asked to do so) • 5.)
