This is Bob. Is this a photograph or is it a painting?. This is a really big painting!. How has he made it look so real?. Chuck Close painted this image. He used techniques called Chiaroscuro, pointillism and hatching. Chiaroscuro is the correct term for using light and dark shades.

  7. Chiaroscuro is the correct term for using light and dark shades.

  8. Pointillism is the correct term for using small dots to create light and dark shades.

  9. Cross-hatching and hatching is the correct term for using lines close together to create light and dark shades.

  10. Your first task for today. Complete this sheet on learning to draw tone and texture. Follow the instructions on the sheet. This sheet will be marked out of 5 marks.

  11. Chuck Close He was big and clumsy and not very athletic. He was dyslexic and because of this everyone considered him dumb and lazy. He was told to forget about college. Chuck couldn't play sports because he couldn't keep up with his friends.

  13. Chuck Close Working: Almost all of Close’s work is based on the use of a grid. None of Chuck Close's images are created digitally or photo-mechanically. They are all created the old fashioned way – by hand.

  15. Drawing of ‘half’-Bob Try this.Your teacher will give you a photocopy of this portrait called BOB. You will also get a photocopy with only one side of BOB’S face and the other side blank.Using a sharp soft pencil (2b or softer) draw in the other side of Bob’s face. Look closely at the shadows, the highlights and the detailed line work for the hair. Try and get a good range of tones by pressing hard with your pencil to make darker areas or lightly to achieve lighter tones. Draw the outline first. Then shade in the tone.

  16. Secret Tip! If you have trouble drawing the other side of the face follow these steps.. 1.Tape your image of BOB on the back window . 2. Tape your blank paper over the top of the photocopy of BOB. 3. Draw in the missing sections.
