  3. One of the oldest musical instruments in the world-in 1990 the oldest jaw harp was found in Japan, it was thought to be used in 900 A.D. • It is found in almost every region of the world

  4. JAW HARP • Little early history available • Not a harp at all • Has no historic association with Jewish traditions • Very popular instrument because it is portable and relatively easy to play. • Wide range of sounds produced.

  5. Main purposes • Entertainment • Psychotherapy- trance and healing the sick • In New Guinea- traditional ceremonial instrument • Asian communities- Used to serenade love ones. If left as a gift it is a proposal of marriage. • Austria- Jaw harp was banned by authorities in the 19th century because it was considered an instrument of seduction.

  6. DEFINATION • The instrument is an idiophone consisting of a flexible metal tongue attached to a frame. This tongue is placed in the performers mouth and plucked with the finger to produce a note. The note thus produced is constant in pitch, though by changing the shape of their mouth and the amount of air contained in it the performer can cause different overtones to sound.
