  3. Background What do we mean by: Interaction Technology ? Technology that allows communication between student and lecturer `in class’. Specifically technology that allows the answering of multiple choice style question during lectures. Pilot:`Interaction in Lectures with Mobile Devices’: 2011/12 Faculty TESS project - Teaching Enhancement and Student Success. Large cohort module used for Pilot – ECON10042 with 533 students

Background Basic idea to use mobiles instead of handsets to alleviate the logistical problems associated with large cohorts) Main Findings: 71% students use the web on their phones (excluding laptops) and 41/42 students enjoyed the interactive sessions . Motivation TESS 2012 Project to compare two ‘over web’ classroom response systems : MbClick - by Geoff Rubner (FEPS) TurningPoint ResponseWare - Turning Technologies Also to better measure the success of using mobile phones as interaction tools in lectures for large cohorts To pilot the use of `MbClick’ and `TP ResponseWare’ over one academic year Mbclick ECON20401 (520 students) Turning Point ECON10042 (633 students) (30 people used a clicker, 232 used Responseware)

  13. Comments from Students I find it to be a great idea. It's practical and fast. And the Wi-Fi in the Uni Place Theatre has a great signal, so you don't really need to use the 3G. Plus the system works great both on mobile phones and laptops. Brilliant idea. We often turn to our phones when we lose concentration/interest or when the lecture becomes incomprehensible so I think including our devices will keep us alert and participating, as well as checking if our understanding is correct. It was a fun and different way of learning economics. Easier to pay attention The Mbclick is excellent teaching technology. I have learnt so much from this in 20 minutes alone.... Instantly helped answer those difficult question by teaching and opening our minds regarding the subject we didn't fully know. I recommend every university to have this facility. Brilliant!

  14. Conclusion We have used two competing technologies to deliver interaction in lectures using students own mobile devices. Both have proved to work feasibly in large scale use. From survey data we have found that student opinion is consistent between MbClick and TurningPoint ResponseWare. The decision to use either one may ultimately be determined by a requirement for longer asynchronous feedback (MbClick), or ease of adoption (TurningPoint ResponseWare) The differences between the two systems are not significant but the evidence shows that using mobile phones/devices in this way is very popular with students.
