About Steinbeck’s • John was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902 of German and Irish ancestry • His full name is John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. • He was 66 when he died • John has a 19 year old son • His father (John Steinbeck Sr.) served as a County Treasurer • His mother (Olive Hamilton) served as a school teacher • During summer, John worked as a hired hand on nearby branches • After graduating from Salinas High School, he attended Stanford and went to New York to pursue his writing career • He got sent back to California because he didn’t get any of his writing published • First novel was published Cup of Gold • The Pastures of Heaven and To a God Unknown was poorly received by the world

Steinbeck’s Speech Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech 1962 Steinbeck believed he doubt that he should receive the Nobel Prize Steinbeck said the people who wrote literature considered the hard workers He was inspired by William Faulkner To end the speech with his quote he said “In the end is the word, and the word is man, and the word is with man.” John spoke we must seek into ourselves for responsibility and the wisdom

  6. Steinbeck’s Lifeand Work Steinbeck attended Stanford University but did not earn a degree. He grew up in California's Monterey County. He wrote three novels: The Pastures of Heaven ,To a God Unknown, and Of Mice And Men. He wrote twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories. Steinbeck was born in 1902, and died in 1968. His gravestone was at Salinas cemetery.
