About Steinbeck’s • John was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902 of German and Irish ancestry • His full name is John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. • He was 66 when he died • John has a 19 year old son • His father (John Steinbeck Sr.) served as a County Treasurer • His mother (Olive Hamilton) served as a school teacher • During summer, John worked as a hired hand on nearby branches • After graduating from Salinas High School, he attended Stanford and went to New York to pursue his writing career • He got sent back to California because he didn’t get any of his writing published • First novel was published Cup of Gold • The Pastures of Heaven and To a God Unknown was poorly received by the world

He wrote three novels: The Pastures of Heaven ,To a God Unknown, and Of Mice And Men. He wrote twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories. Steinbeck was born in 1902, and died in 1968. His gravestone was at Salinas cemetery.
