  2. Presentation content: What is Pixar? Renderman History Feature films

  3. What is Pixar? Pixar is a CGI (computer generated imagery) animated film studio. It pioneered the animated film industry and is famous for producing the world’s first fully animated feature “Toy Story” in 1995. The company has been highly successful and has remained the leader in the industry, with an average $602 million gross per film of the 11 films it has produced. Pixar’s films have also enjoyed much critical success, with all 8 of their films produced since the inauguration of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature winning the award.

  4. Renderman Renderman is an API (Application Programming Interface) developed by Pixar, used for rendering 3D animation and visual effects. Renderman is considered the gold standard for the visual effects industry, and is used extensively by studios everywhere to create amazing graphics. Every Visual Effects Academy Award winner in the past 15 years has used Pixar’s Renderman and 47 out of the last 50 nominees chose to use it. In 1993 Pixar’s Renderman Development Team received the Scientific and Engineering Academy Award for Renderman.

  5. Pixar’s History • In 1986 Steve Jobs purchased the computer graphic division of Lucasfilm, ltd for $10 million. It was then established as an independent company named Pixar. Steve Jobs took the position of CEO and Ed Catmull who had been the vice president at that division was named co-founder and chief Technical officer of Pixar. • At this time only 44 people were employed at Pixar. • Pixar began as a high end computer company, whose primary product was the Pixar Image Computer. This was a graphics designing computer which originally retailed for $135 000 and was intended for markets such as medicine. With poor sales of the computer, in 1989 Pixar began producing commercials in an attempt to advertise the product, and made its first commercial for Tropicana called “Wake Up”. • In 1990 Pixar sold its hardware division to Vicom. • In 1991 Pixar entered an agreement with Disney to produce three computer animated feature films. The first of these was Toy Story. • In 1995 “Toy Story” was released in the US as the first fully computer generated movie. • In 1997 Pixar entered into an agreement with Disney to jointly produce 5 movies. By this time Pixar’s employees numbered 375. Pixar also released the short film “Geri’s Game”, which showed the new advances in the companies ability to animate skin and cloth.

  6. In 1998 “A Bug’s Life” was released. In 1999 “Toy Story 2” was released. In 2000, Co-founder Ed Catmull is named president of Pixar. The company’s employees now number over 600.
