Banks銀行 • Cash based society • Limited opening and closing times • 9.00am – 3.00pm • You need a gaijin card and hanko to open an account • Your BOE will choose your bank for you • Joyo Bank only in Ibaraki/Tokyo • Makes it hard if you travel outside of the pref. • Don’t lose your 通帳 (bank book)

ATMS現金自動預け払い機 • ATMs have strange opening times • 24 hours banking? • You can use ATMs at convenience stores but extra fees apply (110 yen) • Not all convenience store ATMs are 24 hours… • Cards from home • International VISA cards don’t work at normal ATMs even if they say VISA • International Cirrus cards don’t work at normal ATMs • Citibank has many branches/ATMS in Tokyo. ATMs are open 24 hours

  10. Courier Services (Takyubin)宅急便 • Cheap and fast way to send packages within Japan • Pickup from house/local convenience store • Cheaper rates for suitcases, ski equipment, bicycles, golf bags etc • Possible to send to airport • Pay on delivery / COD • Great for internet shopping
