  3. Does Islam treat women equally? Discuss (2 reasons in detail). Show you have thought about another point of view . Are women treated equally in Islam? PUt the points under 2 columns “treated Equally” or “not treated equally to men” Important decisions require the consent of the both husband and wife. If any of the wives work the money they earn is kept for themselves. Women can choose whom they marry, and have the right to divorce if necessary. The Qu’ranteaches that both men and women are created as equals Muslim women cannot lead Muslim men in prayer. Muslim women's priorities are to her family and to her house Women in Islam Muslim men have the right to marry up to four times but the Koran states that wives need to be treated fairly and equally. Muslim Women have the right to start their own business. Muslim women should dress respectfully in public and not wear make up or perfume. Muslim women can have high positions in government and other professions. • Muslim women are encouraged to seek education – both by their husbands, and more importantly, by the Qur'an.

Do you agree with what these women are saying? 1.Explain which of the opinions you could agree with and why. • Khadeja, 19, says "I tell them the hijab is a right given to me by my Creator who knows us best. It's a benefit to me, so why not? It's something every woman should strive to get and should want." Syed, 17, says “when a woman is covered, men cannot judge me by my appearance but are forced to evaluate me by her personality, character, and morals.” • Rema, 16: "You feel modest...and you feel like you're covered up. You have more self-respect. You have more confidence in yourself that you don't need to care about (how) you look." • Fatima, 21 says “I am surprised that many people wonder if I wears the hijab everywhere (at home, when sleeping, in the shower). The truth is that Muslim women only cover themselves in front of men who are not direct relatives (brothers, fathers, and uncles) to prevent indecent acts or thoughts.”
