  2. modes & effects Blending Modes Blending Modes: a.k.a modes, layer modes, transfer modes Different methods for combining images together Take some properties of one image and combine it with some properties of another image that is often more intriguing than merely stacking Many artists use modes through the “happy accident” method which is a valid way because it can be hard to predict the outcome

  3. modes & effects Blending Modes Each blending mode alter the pixel color values of the layer they are applied to and these alterations are based on the image ( stack of layers) underneath. Each mode has a different set of rules (algorithms or math equations) for how it will alter the color values- R G B of the pixels in the layer it is working on. Differences in COLORS alter the final effect. Blending modes do not replace or obliterate the normal Masks, Effects and Transformations calculated for each layer

  4. modes & effects Applying Modes You find the Modes list in the layer columns in the time line. It may be hidden at first and you will need to add it by selecting the check box names “Modes” Each layer has a default Mode named “normal” applied to it. The Modes have a drop down menu from which you can select a mode. Toggle through the modes list by holding “Shift” and pressing “+” key

  5. modes & effects Modes Categories The first set of modes all make the final image darker in some way: Darkening Modes Darker Multiply Linear Burn Color burn / Classic Burn Darker Color

  6. modes & effects Modes Categories The second set of modes all make the final image lighter in some way: Lightening Modes Add Lighten Screen Linear Dodge Color Dodge/ classic Color Dodge

  7. modes & effects Modes Categories The second set of modes all make the final image lighter in some way: Lighting Modes: intensify contrast and saturation Overlay Soft Light Hard Light Linear Light Vivid light Pin Light Hard Mix

  8. modes & effects Modes Categories The second set of modes all make the final image lighter in some way: Subtraction Modes: subtract color values from layer beneath Difference/ Classic difference * best one Exclusion

  9. modes & effects Modes Categories The second set of modes all make the final image lighter in some way: Property Replacing Modes: Replace the property of the bottom layer with the property of the top. Hue Saturation Color Luminosity

  10. modes & effects Effects and presets Each layer can have multiple effects added to them. Effects can be stacked and the stack order does matter Example: add 4 color ramp then twist vs. Twist then add 4 color ramp Browse presets using: Animation > browse presets Most effects are combinations of many other effects. Common effects: blurs, Distortions, drop shadows, bevels Example: Text animation effects and presets
