  1. Vocabulary • Burnishing ~ to make something shine by rubbing it with a smooth instrument (lighter colored pencil for this assignment) • Complementary colors ~ colors across from each other on the color wheel • Examples of complementary colors are Red & green, Yellow & violet, • Blue & orange

  2. Radial symmetry ~ a type of balance in which something can be divided into two identical halves by a line that passes through a central point at any angle • Mandala ~ a geometric design usually enclosed in a circle, representing the entire universe

Directions for Mandela • use your compass and straight edge to draw your pattern using radial symmetry • Each section must be drawn exactly the same • Cut out templates for small designs that you want to repeat • Smaller sections are easier to color in  • Color Scheme • Keep complementary colors next to each other • Burnish your colors by pressing REALLY hard with the colored pencil • Try blending some colors together (yellow into red or light blue into dark blue) • You can use black colored pencil to outline shapes when you are finished
